The Hallettsville Lions Club met in its first meeting of the new year at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall on Monday, Jan. 8, with Lion president Charles Neumeyer presiding over the meeting.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lion David Smolik, while Lion Charles led the singing of God Bless America and Lion Mike Moore conducted the prayer.
During the prayer, the club prayed for Lion Jim Bujnoch, who was currently in a hospital. Lion Mike said Lion Jim is expected to be released from the hospital later in the week.
Guest attending the meeting was Erica Furnace, who was introduced by Lion Amy Mozisek.
Lion treasurer Dennis Matula presented the treasurer’s report.
Lions Mike and Annabeth Neumeyer reported on the Sun Shade project, who said the start of construction on the project should get started within the next few months.
Lion Charles reported on the Arts and Crafts show. He said the show, the gift-card give away and the cookie walk all did very well. Lion Charles said people attending enjoyed a wonderful atmosphere and the show is developing into a positive event.
Lion Charles said the state convention is scheduled for April 12-13 in Texas City. He said he would attend it on the Saturday of the convention.
The Flags over Hallettsville program was discussed with Lion Virginia Partida saying subscription renewals for this year are being taken at this time. The deadline for renewals is Wednesday, Jan. 31.
Lion Charles reported that he and Lion Virginia attended the DeWitt-Lavaca Special Education Co-Op Christmas party. He said they had an enjoyable time.
The Chamber of Commerce Banquet was discussed with Lion JoAnn Shimek, saying this year’s Banquet format will be different in the past.
Lion Charles spoke of the club possibly getting involved in a pizza attendance program that awards a specific class in high school who has the best attendance record over a period of time.
He said he would speak to the HISD administration about this program which is conducted by other Lions Clubs in the district.
Lion Charles reported the next district meeting will be held in Pearland on Feb. 24.
Under business decisions, the club voted to stay with offering two scholarships to each high school as well as the nursing scholarships offered being the same as the past.
The club also voted to donate to the Turtle Wing Foundation.
Due to not having a Christmas Party and new members needing to be inducted into the club, it was decided to hold a club social gathering at the Neumeyer’s home on Monday, Feb. 12 from 5-7 p.m. Club members would bring finger-type foods to the gathering. Lion Charles said it would count as the second meeting of the month.
Lion Charles mentioned White Cane Day would be held in April.
The meeting adjourned at 12:55 p.m. and the next meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 22.
