Hubert Novak
Hubert Novak, 89, of Shiner, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024.
Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, January 18 at Thiele-Cooper Funeral Home in Yoakum, with prayers of the holy rosary following at 7 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 19 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, with Rev. Bryan Heyer serving as the celebrant.
Pallbearers were Hoby Biedermann, Tony Martinez, Holt Biedermann, Robert Patek Jr., Carl Janak and Troy Gillar.
Honorary pallbearers were Hubert’s loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services are under the care and direction of Thiele-Cooper Funeral Home, Yoakum.
He was born on November 7, 1934, in Hallettsville, to Frank and Albina Novak. He was the oldest child and had three sisters. He married Mary Ann Kutac of Sweet Home in September of 1959. They had three children and resided in Shiner after retiring from their jobs in San Antonio.
A few years after the passing of Mary Ann, he married Elizabeth Hajek Patek in March of 2006. They are members of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church.
In 1953, Hubert graduated from the Sam and Will Moore Institute - President of his Senior Class - in Moulton. He grew up on the family farm in Witting. He served in the U.S. Army from March 1957 to April 1963 and then worked at Santex International Trucks in San Antonio for 40 years retiring as the Comptroller.
Hubert was an accomplished accordion player with the Tune Twisters in San Antonio and later with the Shiner Hobo Band. Never able to sit still, Hubert loved playing dominos, being involved with the Catholic Church, working at his Shiner farm and spending time with his adoring family.
Hubert and Mary Ann pioneered her dream of opening a bed & breakfast. They did so in renovating the now Old Kasper House Victorian Inn in Shiner. He subsequently owned and operated the Shiner Country Inn.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 18 years, Elizabeth Novak; son, Mark (Mary) Novak; daughters, Yvonne (Herbert) Biedermann and Cynthia (Tony) Martinez; grandchildren, Lauren (Levi) Walls, Samantha Novak, Nicole (Brandon) Hinze, Holt (Rylee) Biedermann, Jessica Schwab, Rachel (Shawn) Barnett, Amanda Biedermann, Dominic Novak; and great-grandchildren, Finn and Duke Walls and Nora Biedermann.
Additionally, he is survived by step-children, Robert Patek Jr. (Robin), Lisa (Harold) Koenning, Connie (Jeff) Mraz; brother in-law, Robert Hajek. Siblings include Loretta (Tony) Janak and Barbara (Elroy) Holik.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ann Novak; his parents; sister, Kathy Gillar; and brothers-in-law, Eugene Gillar and Edward Hajek.
