St. Paul girls basketball: BSJ rallies in second half to down SP
Ahead of Bryan St. Joseph 13-11 at halftime in the TAPPS 2A area game at Fayetteville on Feb. 20, St. Paul managed just seven points while yielding 30 points to St. Joseph to exit the playoffs in a 41-20 loss.
“We had a lead at half time but I thought it could have been a larger lead had we finished around the basket and rebounded better. We felt good about things at half time and felt like we would win,” St. Paul head coach Jake Wachsmuth said. “The second half did not start well and we never got back on track. It was disappointing.”
The Flyers led just 7-6 after one frame and St. Paul went on a 7-4 run in the second quarter.
St. Joseph outscored the Lady Cardinals 19-5 in the third frame and went on a 11-2 run in the fourth box.
Kristin Cerny led St. Paul with eight points.
The Lady Cardinals will graduate Brooke Cerny, Maurin Knesek, Julia Barecky and Gracie Machart.
The Lady Cardinals’ final 2023-24 record is 17-9.
“I am very proud of the girls. I saw a lot of improvement throughout the year. We had a team that had to blend youth and experience and the girls did a great job of working together,” Wachsmuth said. “We had two seniors that started - Maurin Knesek and Brooke Cerny and they were our captains. But we also had two seniors that didn’t get to play as much - Gracie Machart and Julia Barecky and they were tremendous teammates. I am fortunate to have coached these four seniors for four years.”
