Is Bob Right?

By Michelle Price

Bee Cave Bob says Texas gets an early spring. Is he correct? Bee Cave Bob, the weather fortune teller of Texas, made the prediction of an early spring for Texas just like his counterpart Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction; both did not see their shadow on February 2, 2024. One may ask, who is Bee Cave Bob? It is no secret that here in Texas we like to be independent and do things our own way - some may say the only way. While the rest of the U.S. was eagerly awaiting to see if a groundhog named Phil saw his shadow, here in Texas we wait for an Armadillo’s expertise in his own ability to see his shadow and let us know we can expect the smell of spring flowers. What may even be more interesting about Texans’ choice in the armadillo for a mascot is the fact that armadillos have poor eyesight and hearing, but a keen sense of smell. It may seem odd to trust a blind armadillo searching to see his shadow but the armadillo’s owner says that Bee Cave Bob has been 100 percent accurate in his predictions in years past. Since 2011, Bob has been predicting whether spring is coming, or winter will be extended by another six weeks here in the Lone Star State. But Bob’s predictions aren’t always the same as his counterpart Phil’s. Last year, Phil predicted an extended winter, to which Bob said, “no way,” since he did not see his own shadow. Both Phil and Bob predict the weather through their shadows. If they can’t see their shadow, it’s an early spring, but if they can, winter prevails. Last year, Bob predicted an early spring, which isn’t uncommon given the Texas heat. In his more than 10-year career, most of Bob’s predictions have been an early spring. He predicted an extended winter only three times, in 2011, 2013, and 2022. What are other sources predicting”? Well, The Old Farmer’s Almanac forecast also “favors an early spring” in 2024, with a few exceptions. On the other hand, the younger cousin of The Old Farmer’s Almanac, founded in 1818, has a different view of what the spring is likely to bring.

“We’re heading for a ‘Polar Coaster Spring,’” The Farmers’ Almanac wrote, “Farmers’ Almanac long-range weather forecast calls for many days of cold temperatures. That’s right, “The BRRR is Back” … and it may stay a while!” So, how accurate are the predictions each year? The Farmers’ Almanac claims an accuracy rate of about 80% to 85% and The Old Farmer’s Almanac claims to be accurate 80% of the time. Based on those percentages Bee Cave Bob has been more accurate and now we wait to see if Bob and Phil are right this year.
