YISD cancels general election

By Clayton Kelley

The Yoakum Independent School District officially ordered to cancel their 2024 general election at the March 4 meeting. They opted to do this because YISD had no contested races for school board positions.

The state of Texas permits local entities to cancel their election whenever they have no challenged races. Only incumbents were in the running for YISD. President Glen Kusak, Vice President Terry Boening, and trustee Donnetta Sherre will all be reviving their respective roles on the school board for the 2024-25 school year. Had any challengers ran, the election would’ve been held on May 4.

“I am very satisfied with the current board,” Superintendent Tom Kelley said. “They support the students and do what’s best for kids at Yoakum ISD. They also always make great decisions based on what’s best for the community and our students.”

Although only incumbents ran, Kelley said the district is always prepared for any challengers.

All board members are gearing up for the Texas Association of School Boards Summer Leadership Institute Workshop starting Thursday, June 13 in San Antonio.

Board members approved the 2024- 25 calendar at the board meeting and authorized the Superintendent to accept bids on surplus property. Pay dates for the 2024-25 school year was also approved. Those will be in November and December.

During the meeting, the district reported that they collected $11.3 million in maintenance and operations and $5.7 million in interest and sinking from the tax assessor collector.

Current enrollment numbers are at 1,465 students. Last year at this time, enrollment numbers were at 1,498 students.

The Yoakum High School One Act Play team will be traveling to Edna on tomorrow for their district competition.

We wish them the best of luck!
