Shiner baseball: Comanches split four at Appelt Tourney

The Comanches went 2-2 in the Hallettsville Jimmy Appelt Tournament.

The Sandcrabs got a pair of one-out hits in the bottom of the fifth and took advantage on a Shiner error to score two runs, rallying from a 1-0 deficit to edge the Comanches 2-1 Thursday night.
Demetrio Rodriguez opened the bottom of the fifth with a groundout to third baseman Bode Werner. Ethan Ramirez laid down a single down the third-base line and advanced all the way home on the double by Julian Cazares.
Port Lavaca Calhoun also got runners on via a batter hit and walk but could not add any insurance runs.
The Sandcrabs held the Comanches to just one hit, which came in the next inning by Kaidan Boothe. He was later thrown out at second on a fielder’s choice when Boe Boehm put a ball down in right field.
The Sandcrabs got a runner all the way to third in the bottom of the sixth but three straight strikeouts by relief pitcher Jake Simper ended the inning.
Shiner went in order in the top of the seventh to end the game.
Shiner opened the game with a couple of two-out walks but could not bring anyone home. 
Calhoun got their first and only hit until later in the game in the bottom of the inning.
The Shiner run was unearned and came mainly on Sandcrab miscues in the top of the third. With two outs, Cale Shows earned a walk and later took second on a passed ball. Landyn Pohler sent a ball into left field that was mishandled, allowing Shows to score and Pohler all the way to second but nothing further was allowed by Calhoun.
In the fourth frame, Bode Werner and Charlie Clifford were walked. Boothe put the ball back toward the pitcher who threw to third for the fielder’s choice on Werner. Boehm was hit by the pitch to load things up but all three runners were left stranded.
Carson Schuette took the loss on the mound with three hits, two runs, one batter hit, two walks and seven strikeouts in five innings worked. Simper pitched one inning with a walk and three strikeouts.
Boehm had five putouts in the field.

Shiner 12, Cuero 2
An eight-run second inning helped Shiner rebound for a 12-2 win over Cuero on Friday afternoon.
The Comanches opened up a 3-0 lead in the first inning and then tacked on one run in the third inning. Cuero was able to score two runs in the fourth inning but were unable to close the gap further.
Boothe worked five innings on the mound with two runs on seven hits, a walk and seven strikeouts.
At the plate, Boothe was 3-for-4 with one run; Schuette hit 2-for-4 with two runs, triple and two RBI;  Pohler hit 2-for-4 with one run, double and three RBI.
Jake Simper finished 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI;  Preston Todd batted 1-for-3 with one RBI; Caleb Lehnert was 1-for-2 with one RBI and two runs; Shows had one RBI and  two runs; Werner and Clifford scored one run each.

Shiner 3, Navarro 2
The Comanches scored two runs in the top of the fourth to break a 1-1 tie with Navarro on the way to a 3-2 win in their second game on Friday.
Both teams started the game with a single run and the Panthers scored once in the sixth inning to get within 3-2.
Clifford got the win with six hits, two runs, two walks and two strikeouts in six innings; Pohler worked one inning in relief with two strikeouts.
At the plate, Schuette was 2-for-3 with one run and a double; Boothe hit 1-for-3, RBI and double; Simper finished 1-for-3 with one run.
Pohler hit 1-for-2 with one RBI.
Clifford hit 1-for-2 with one RBI; Werner added one run.
