Shiner softball: Lady Comanches softball gets five wins over spring break
The Lady Comanches had a packed Spring Break with a doubleheader at Bloomington March 11, hosted Nixon-Smiley in a doubleheader on March 12 and hosted Schulenburg on Thursday.
Shiner 14, Sch’burg 3
After winning a bunch of lopsided contests the last couple of days, the Shiner softball team needed more of a challenging game.
They got it somewhat in a 14-3 win over the Lady Shorhorns in five innings.
“We needed some adversity; we needed some sort of wall to go up against. We knew Schulenburg was going to be a good hitting team,” Lady Comanches head coach Jason Keller said.
Lauren Springfield earned the win with three runs on five hits, two walks and striking out 10 batters in five innings. In some of the previous games, Springfield only went three or four innings.
“We needed Lauren to extend her outing; we did not necessarily need her to pitch the whole game because we do have depth at pitcher,” Keller said. “She just needed to face some adversity that a pitcher has to face such as reacting to a team’s hitting or when they hit the ball up the middle with runners in scoring positions. Those are the kind of things we want to try to put her in a position for and it was good to see that today. We also wanted to see how we would respond to a close game.”
Shiner got another double-digit hitting day with 15 with Rylee Vancura and Paeden Vincik each getting three hits and a home run. Brinley Ramirez got two hits, including her first homer of the season.
“It was exciting. Our first game of the season was against Weimar, we saw higher-velocity pitching; throughout the rest of district play and these extra games, we have seen low-velocity pitching,” Ramirez said. “I finally adjusted after many at-bats. In the first inning, I was in front of the pitch; fixed my timing and got under it, the wind helped me out and I hit over (the fence). “
Shiner is continuing to improve at the plate.
“It’s exciting knowing that we barely have practiced together and what we are doing right now, it’s great down the line they will hit a lot better. Once we start seeing teams like Ganado, it will help us seeing higher velocity,” Ramirez said.
“Our approach at the plate was good. We hit hard, we hit line drives; we did not hit the ball in the air as much which is important,” Keller said. “Those will matter when you play good teams like Ganado and Weimar. You have to hit the ball hard on the line and make the defense make plays.”
The Lady ‘Horns got base runners via a hit, hit by pitch and walk but no runs to start the game.
In the bottom of the first, Ramirez and Vancura got hits with Ramirez scoring on Vancura’s single.
Vincik tripled with one out, Jo Caka scored on a hit by Kailey Boedeker, who went to third on Callie Sevcik’s double and scored on the throw. Kloe Polasek grounded out to third base to score Sevcik for a 5-0 Shiner lead.
Shiner plated just one run in the second on a one-out jack by Vancura.
In the the top of the fourth, Schulenburg came to life. Summer Livingston singled with one out, Fay Kutac doubled and both scored on the triple by Mikayla Stang. Haylie Goode walked and advanced home on the single by Kinley Tillery.
