YHS Student Council earns statewide recognition
Yoakum High School (YHS) Student Council has been recognized by the Texas Association of Student Councils (TASC)for its Top Project submission. TASC has almost 1,200 member schools. Of those, it is one of only 10 high school student councils statewide to receive the highly esteemed honor.
Projects were evaluated based on how well students met objectives; the involvement from the council, the student body, the staff, and the community; originality, and overall success.
“This Student Council led by Abbie Galvan, has surpassed all expectations we had when we started the project. The group has made our school and our community extremely proud. Yoakum High School has a level of pride and desire for excellence that is now being recognized,” said Student Council Advisor Amy Robbins. Kristin Hagan adds, “ I am extremely proud of Abbie and our YHS Student Council for their work with Project Bulldog Beautification. The project has had positive impacts on our school and our community. There are amazing things happening at YHS and our students are here to prove it and show their pride. I am honored to be a part of the legacy they are creating.”
YHS Student Council members develop proven skills in team building, problem solving, project planning, and decisionmaking. In addition, student council members serve their communities through co-curricular activities while strengthening academic and civic skills. Student Council President and leader of the Energy and Environment Committee, Abbie Galvan, is in charge of the Bulldog Beautification Project and expressed her excitement in earning the recognition, “I am so proud to be from Yoakum. The community has been so supportive of its students. Thank you to all the alumni, businesses, clubs, and community members who helped make the project happen. It is beautiful to see our community come together and do something great. Thank you for making my senior year a year to remember.”
