YISD submits applications for funding

The Yoakum Independent School District has initiated several applications for funding at the April 8 meeting.

One of these applications included a contract for Title Programs and the Carl Perkins funds.

“This is federal funds that can be used towards our career tech programs,” YISD Superintendent Tom Kelley said. “This includes our agricultural students as well as our FFA and woodshop students.”

The district also applied for federal funding for the 2024-25 school year. An update on the baseball and softball field projects were also given by Rawley McCoy and Associates representative Billy Berger.

Updates included the re-turfing the baseball field. They are also looking to rotate the baseball field so that it is away from a floodplain. The softball field is to begin construction.

“Drainage may be a big problem to tackle,” Berger said.

Both Kelley and Berger will be approaching Yoakum City Council to request a road closure around the field areas.

An amendment to the 2024-25 school calendar was made as Spring Break will start on March 17 and end on March 21 to accommodate and coincide with the Victoria College duel credit enrollment, according to Kelley.
