YHS Bulldog track wins co-state track and field championship

It was a great day for the Yoakum High School (YHS) track and field program May 2 at the UIL state meet.

The Yoakum boys were co-state champions with Hallettsville with each team scoring 36 points.

The 400-meter relay team of Trae Cuellar, X’Zavier Barnett, Qyion Williams and Zach Taylor won the race with a time of 41.81 seconds.

The 800-relay team of Cuellar, Barnett, Williams and Taylor got runner up with a time of 1:27.03.

Chase Polk came in ninth in the 400 with a time of 51.4.

Both boys relay teams set school records with their times.

Jayana Phillips won the triple jump with a best distance of 40 feet, 4.25 inches and also reached 38-5 1/2, 39-2, 39-5, and 39-11 1/2.

She placed ninth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.61 seconds.

Phillips came in third in the long jump with a best jump of 18-1 1/4 and her other jumps were 16- 11, 17-8 3/4, 17-10, 17-10 1/2, and 17-9 1/2.

Jayla Hessler came in fourth in triple jump with a best of 38-6 1/4 to go along with 36-1 1/4, 37- 1/2, and 37-1 3/4.

The 400-relay team of Valentina Hopkins, Phillips, Aubrie Jendrzey, and Hessler placed eighth with a time of 49.14.
