LB clear huge hurdle in sweep of Lady Lions

The Hallettsville Lady Brahmas advanced to the state quarterfinals after sweeping San Gertrudis Academy, 4-0 and 6-4.

It was sweet revenge for the LB who lost to the Lady Lions, 5-4 and 14-12, a year ago.

“We had a great defensive showing in both games,” Lady Brahma coach Callie Kresta said. “We did not make an error to back up great pitching and had great situational hitting when we got a runner in scoring position.”

GAME ONE LB 4, SANTA GERTRUDIS 0

Grace Halata and Madison Mikes combined to pitch a two-hitter in the 4-0 victory Thursday in Sinton.

Halata (12-1) worked the first 5.1 innings and gave up both hits, walked two and struck out one.

Mikes struck out two, walked two and hit a batter in her 1.2 innings of work.

From the second inning on, Halata retired 11 batters in a row before giving up a single to Sadie Bazan to begin the sixth inning.

The LB got two outstanding defensive plays from out fielders Ella Amsden, Hanna Zachary and shortstop Macey Pustka.

Fundamentals of the game were on full display in the 4-0 victory Thursday.

Madison Mikes and Pustka both laid down sacrifice bunts that led to runs.

Hallettsville (38-2) pushed across a run in the third inning when Pustka was free-passed, moved to second on a sac bunt by Mikes. Zachary then hit a 3-2 pitch up the middle for a single to score Pustka.

Hallettsville increased the lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning.

Halata led off with a single and courtesy runner Layten Kolacny scored on a single to center by Mikes

The LB added two insurance runs in the sixth frame.

With one out, Kaylie Olivarez beat out an infield hit and scored on a triple by Amsden. Carson Jansky ensued when she hit a 3-2 pitch for a double to left field.

Mikes pitched out of a jam in the seventh inning after walking and hitting a batter at the onset. But Mikes struck out Carino Perales before getting Hannah Perales to line out to Pustka at short and Zachary made a diving catch in center field on a line drive hit by Kiena Cruz to end the game.

Traffic on the bases was rare as the LB stranded three and SG five.

LB 6, SANTA GERTRUDIS 4

The Lady Brahmas got superb pitching performances from Kaylie Olivarez, Grace Halata and Madison Mikes in Saturdays’ win.

Olivarez started and worked 3.2 innings, and ceded two runs, three hits, walked two and struck out three.

Grace Halata threw an inning and a third and surrendered a run and three hits.

Madison Mikes (11-0) pitched the final inning and also and and also gave also gave up a run, two hits and fanned two.

The LB took a 6-3 lead into the sixth inning. With two outs Addison Mireles doubled and scored on a base hit by Trinity Silguero. Mikes escaped further damage when she got Izzy De los Santos to fly out to฀ left  field. Mikes retired the Lady Lions 1-2-3 in the seventh.

Hallettsville scored  in the first when Hanna Zachary led off with a double, stole third and rode home on Macie Jansky’s sacrifice fly.

The Lady Lions tiedthe score in the second frame on a RBI single by Kayla Cruz.

The score stayed at 1-1 until the LB scored twice in the fourth inning.

Ella Amsden drew a base on balls with one out and went to second on a single by Carson Jansky. Halata got Amsden home with a single and Carson Jansky scored when Macey Pustka grounded out.

The Lady Lions trimmed the lead to 3-2 prior to putting across three runs in the fifth inning.

Zachary was hit by the pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rebecca Satsky. Macie Jansky drove in Zachary with a base hit. Kaylie Olivarez walked and Amsden came through with a single that got Olivarez in. Halata, who was 2 for 3, singled to right to score the final run.

Mireles had three hits in four trips for the Lady Lions.

Both teams had eight hits with SG stranding eight and the LB five.
