DOTY, Grandview too much for Lady Brahmas
AUSTIN – The Hallettsville Lady Brahmas ran into a buzz saw in the form of Madi Doty and the Grandview Zebras in the Class 3A state semifinals at Red & Charline McCombs Field Wednesday, May 29.
Doty, a lean 6-2 sophomore right hander who has verbally committed to the University of Texas-Austin, struck out 13 Lady Brahmas en route to an 11-2 victory.
Doty faced the minimum of 15 batters through five innings. Macey Pustka looped a single to left in the third inning, but was doubled off first when Madison Mikes got good aluminum on the ball and lined out to Doty.
Of the 13 strikeouts, four LB were caught looking.
Three LB pitchers issued eight walks and hit two batters. Three of the walks scored with two bases on balls forcing in a run.
Hallettsville (40-3) dug themselves a big hole early in the top of the first inning.
“We came back before, but with a team like Grandview, you can’t be too far down and try to claw your way back,” Lady Brahma head coach Callie Kresta said.
Lead off hitter Jaley James’s fly ball to right field was dropped. Starting Hallettsville pitcher Kaylie Olivarez walked Sydney Mann on a 3-2 pitch prior to Doty bashing a two-run double to right center. Bella Jeter, who drove in five runs with two hits, hit another double to score Doty. Jeter scored on a base hit by Kat Gordy to end the inning.
Olivarez set the Zebras down 1-2-3 in the second inning before a two-run third frame made it 6-0.
The Zebras appeared to be headed for a run rule with three scores in the fourth inning for a 9-0 lead with the big hit a two-run double by Jeter.
Hallettsville scored its two runs in the sixth inning. Grace Halata drew a walk, advanced to third on an infield out by Pustka, to third on another ground out and scored on a Zebra error. Hanna Zachary scored on a two-out single by Macie Jansky.
Head coach Callie Kresta went through three pitchers with Mikes having the most success. Mikes gave up two runs, walked two and struck out one in her two innings of work.
“Doty is the best pitcher we’ve faced all year hands down,” Kresta said
