YHS Bulldogs face physical Port Lavaca Sandcrabs in opener

The Yoakum Bulldogs play the first of two road trips to open the season with a trip to Port Lavaca Calhoun at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Sandcrabs are coming off 9-5 (4-1) season where they advanced to the regional final/state quarterfinals.

They return 18 lettermen, seven offensive and four defensive starters.

“Port Lavaca is always a good team and they are going to be physical,” Bulldogs head coach Bo Robinson said. “They are definitely going to move the ball a lot.”

The ‘Dog defense has to limit the Sandcrabs scoring.

“We have to be able to get some turnovers or stop their drives,” Robinson said. “Offensively, we will need to score plenty because they will score points.”

Key players for the Sandcrabs are RB-DB Darrick Salinas, QB Alex Parker, LB Coltyn Judd, TE Fischer Franck and OL-DL Ricky Martinez.

EDNA SCRIMMAGE

The Bulldogs played Edna in their second and final scrimmage of the season.

“We looked like we were not ready, looked a little lackadaisical ” Robinson said.

“We had a good scrimmage against La Vernia (Aug. 16). When you do well in a scrimmage, you don’t always see what you need to work on.”

Against the Cowboys, Yoakum was struggling to play its assignments correctly.

“We had several players playing at positions and some who have not played on Friday nights,” he said. “Edna is a pretty good team.”
