Cannon rededication ceremony held on island by YCC AND YPD Sept. 19

The monumental M1 57 MM Anti-Tank Gun purchased by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2456 somewhere between 1951 and 1952 was donated to the City of Yoakum in December of 2000.

The anti-tank gun (the cannon), has held guard over the City of Yoakum for more than two decades. Going through one renovation in 2001, the cannon received another facelift compliments of the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA). The “Big Gun” was brought back home and presented at an unveiling ceremony Sept. 19.

The Yoakum American Legion Post 395 committed to preparing the sight for the cannon installation with a 16’X18’ concrete slab as the cannon’s new resting place, in an effort to protect, preserve, and display the historic monument.

Partnering with the City of Yoakum, LCRA, and the Yoakum Economic Development Corporation, the American Legion hopes to honor our military, current and past, for their great service in protecting our freedoms.

The project serves to beautify our community, bring a sense of pride and comradery to our citizens, and remind us the sacrifices made by members of our military.
