Local high school football: Comanches face FC in return; St. Paul plays at Sacred Heart

The Comanches see their first on-field district action following last week’s cancellation of their opener against Charlotte. The Comanches will host Falls City. The Cardinals will travel to Hallettsville for a district rivalry game against Sacred Heart.
Falls City at Shiner
The Comanches’ last action was a 56-7 win over Luling on Sept. 27 to end non district. Shiner had a scheduled bye Oct. 4 and then an unscheduled bye last week after Charlotte forfeited the district opener for both teams.
The Beavers are currently 4-2 and won their district opener against Louise 48-7.
Falls City is scoring 35 points a game and yielding 22 points a game.
“It’s going to be a challenging game. Falls City makes deep-playoff runs every year for a reason,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
The Beavers offense has excelled in their running attack with 1,754 yards on 235 carries for 7.5 average a carry and 292.3 yards a game with 23 touchdowns and have run the ball on 87.6 percent of their offensive plays.
Quarterback Braylon Johnson is the top rusher with 850 yards on 68 carries, 12.5 average a carry, 141.7 yards a game and 13 touchdowns.
“Braylon Johnson will be the best athlete we would have seen to this point. He can run and he can throw. He is a big part of their offense,” Boedeker said.
Tyler Pawelek is the second-leading rusher with 373 yards and six touchdowns.
Johnson has thrown for 262 yards on 11-of-31 for six touchdowns and two interceptions.Kain Jurgajtis has six catches for 95 yards and three touchdowns.
“Tyler Pawelek and Kain Jurgaitis have also made lots of plays for their offense. And they have a big offensive line,” Boedeker said.
Falls City runs out of multiple formations on offense.
“They will line up with three backs in the back field, a no-back formation or spread which make it a challenge for our defense. They have a power-run game or can run quarterback read option out of the spread,” Boedeker said. “Our defense will need to be simple; must play assignments well and tackle well; most importantly we will need to win the line of scrimmage.”
Falls City bases out of the 4-3 on defense but will show many looks.Riley Ehrlich leads the defense with 46 total tackles, 27 solo, 19 assists, 13.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks. Jurgajtis has 36 tackles, 22 solo tackles, 14 assists and 2.0 tackles for loss.
Austin Bordovsky had three interceptions.
“Our offensive line will need to get a good push and win the line of scrimmage,” Boedeker said. “Falls City has athletic linebackers and secondary.”
St. Paul at SH
The Cardinals take a short drive east on 90A to Hallettsville to play Sacred Heart in the annual rivalry game.
St. Paul head coach Barry Wolf, in his first time to face the Indians as head coach, said the Cardinals are viewing the game as another opporunity to get better at what they do.
“It is a rivalry game but for us it is more about doing the things we need to do well,” he said. “If we play well, we will be okay.”
St.  Paul beat Conroe Covenant 42-7 last week to open district while the Indians fell to Bryan Brazos Christian 36-7.
The Indians are 3-3 on the year, scoring 17.6 points a game while yielding 22.6 points a game.
On offense, the Indians run the counter play very well.
“What they run is not too complicated but they are very good at it,” Wolf said.
Sacred Heart quarterback Andrew Steffek is very mobile and makes plays with his feet.
“He will scramble if he gets into a bind and his receivers are covered,” Wolf said. “We will have to be aware of him and contain him when he runs.”
The Indians run a ’50’ on the defensive side.
“We saw a ’50’ from the Conroe defense last week,” Wolf said. “Everyone will switch up their defense when they play us and we need to adjust accordingly.”
