Local high school football: Playoffs on tap for Shiner teams

The Comanches and Cardinals football open playoffs this week in their respective bi-district games. The Cardinals will play Fort Worth Temple Christian Friday at Temple Central Texas Christian while Shiner is closer to home as they battle Woodsboro today at 7 p.m. in Cuero.
Shiner vs Woodsboro
The Comanches open the 2024 playoffs against the Woodsboro Eagles.
The Eagles went 1-3 in District 16-2ADII and placed fourth.
They score an average of 27.3 points a game and yield 32.7 points a game on defense.
“Woodsboro’s offense will be a challenge to defend. They run a Slot-T with double tight end and misdirection plays. We faced a Slot-T earlier in this season but not this version of it,” Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
Running back Amarian Zambezi is the key to the Woodsboro Slot-T attack.
“He makes a lot of big  plays for them,” Boedeker said. “Assignment football will be crucial for our defense.”
The Eagles run the 4-3 on defense but will likely mix it up agains the Comanches’ double tight formations.
“Winning the line of scrimmage and communicating well will be key because Woodsboro has size on the defensive line,” Boedeker said.
St. Paul vs FW Temple Christian
The Cardinals take on the Eagles of Fort Worth Temple Christian in Temple.
The game was originally scheduled to be played in Shiner but moved to Temple Central Texas Christian.
FW Temple is predominantly running team on offense with 197.5 yards a game.
“They will do plenty of things such as line up in an unbalanced line that defenses have to adjust to,” Cardinals head coach Barry Wolf said. “That creates issues on the backside and once you adjust, they hit you on the backside. They do not have a lot of speed.”
They have two 500-plus yard rushers in  quarterback Joseph Waldo (77-547, six touchdowns) and running back Nathan Williams (72-504, six touchdowns.
When Waldo does throw it (37-of-79 passings for 447 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions), his main receiver is Jaxon Florey (12-242, one touchdown).
On the defensive side, Williams has 57 total tackles, 37 solo, 20 assists and 4.5 tackles for loss.
Florey has three interceptions.
“They move around a lot on defense,” Wolf said. “We will have to stick to the basic rules of blocking because we are not sure of what they will do.”
