Shiner football: Shiner scores 44 in first quarter in rout of Woodsboro
Shiner scored 44 points in the first quarter and completely overran Woodsboro Eagles 69-6 Thursday night in the 2ADII bi-district game at Cuero’s Gobbler Stadium.
The Comanches had 11 different players run the football and had nine different players score touchdowns.
Caleb Cowan led the 330-yard Shiner rushing attack with 79 yards on three carries and two touchdowns while Carson Schuette had two rushes for 65 yards and one touchdown, and Caleb Lehnert added 56 yards on four carries and one touchdown. Schuette was 1-for-2 passing for 53 yards with his one completion being the only completion of the game, a 53-yard touchdown to Boe Boehm.
A 3-yard run by Lehnert barely 90 seconds into the game put Shiner ahead 7-0. Cowan scored hist first, a 31-yard run, to give Shiner a 14-0 lead with 8:41 left in the quarter.
Just a little over a minute of game time later, Schuette scored on a 40-yard run.
On the next drive, Jarvis Williams intercepted a pass and a few plays later, Clayton Fric scored from the Eagles 15.
The next Shiner offensive possession was only one play — the touchdown pass to Boehm from Schuette to give the Comanches a 35-0 lead at the 3:24 mark of the quarter.
On the next Woodsboro possession, the Shiner pass rush forced quarterback Jordan Vega to throw the ball away while in his own end zone and the Eagles got flagged for intentional grounding to give Shiner two points.
Shiner offense did not get to take the field afterwards as Woodsboro contacted the free kick and Landen Christensen recovered the live ball and advanced it 17 yards for a Shiner touchdown to give them a 44-0 lead with three minutes left in the third.
In the second frame, Cowan had his second score, a 36-yard run at the 9:15 mark and the Comanches scored right at the end of the quarter on a 9-yard run by Jace Caddell with the two-point run no good.
Chase Malinovsky scored on a 13-yard run at the 3:45 mark of the third quarter and Stephon Bradley had a 1-yard run at the 4:20 mark of the fourth quarter with neither two-point play good.
Woodsboro got the last Shiner kickoff to the Comanche 23 and Amarian Zambezi scored on a 13-yard run with no time left on the clock with the PAT no good.
