Local high school football:Comanches face Brackett; Cards rematch with BBC

The Cardinals get a rematch with Bryan Brazos Christian in the regional round while the Comanches battle Brackett in the area round.
Shiner vs Brackett
The Comanches play Brackett in the area round against Brackett Tigers at 7 p.m. Friday in Jourdanton.
Brackett is 7-3 and defeated Burton 27-26 in the bi-district round last Friday.
They score 38.6 points a game and yield 19.7 points a game.
“Offensively, they have been able to score quite a few points,” Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
The Tigers run the football on 78.6 percent of their offensive plays and run for 201 yards a game.
Leading the attack is Kontagious Cook who has 990 yards on 94 carries, 10.5 average and 18 touchdowns; quarterback Trent Sandoval has 78 rushes for 633 yards, 8.1 average and five touchdowns.
Sandoval had completed 34-of-63 passing for 428 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. Jordan Balderas is the main receiver with 212 yards on 16 catches and two touchdowns.
“They like to run counters and zone read out of the spread, in the shotgun which we have seen before,” Boedeker said. “Cook was the district MVP last year and Sandoval can also run the ball well. They are not overly big but run hard and their offensive line is physical. We will have to keep our eyes on both of them.”
On defense, Abel Aguirre has 30 total tackles, 26 solo tackles, four assists, 16.0 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks.
Aguirre and Andrew Loftus have two fumble recoveries each.
“They base out of the ’50’ but will mix it up. The linebacker group is very sound. Our offensive line will have to communicate well and all be on the same page on blocking schemes,” Boedeker said. “We will have to play well on both sides of the football.”
St. Paul vs Bryan Brazos Christian
The Cardinals get a second shot at Bryan Brazos Christian in the TAPPS IV regional round at Hutto Memorial Stadium at noon on Saturday.
St. Paul defeated Fort Worth Temple Christian 48-7 in the area round.
The two teams played in district in Shiner on Oct. 19 with the Eagles winning 36-6. In the game Cooper Murr was 15-of-24 passing for 217 yards and one touchdown while rushing for one touchdown.
Truett Goodyk ran for a touchdown and caught a touchdown; Jackson Caffey ran for 69 yards and one touchdown.
“We need to work on tackling. With the stunting we did in that game, it was our first time running those particular stunts and we were a little loose,” St. Paul head coach Barry Wolf said. “We also need to improve our pass defense.”
In the previous game, the Eagles limited St. Paul to one score.
“We did have some success running the ball,” Wolf said. “We need to be able to stay on our blocks more and block their stunting linebackers to stop their charge.”
Brazos Christian is undefeated (10-0) and had a bye during the area round
