Shiner girls basketball: Lady Comanches place No. 8 in Navarro Tourney
The Shiner girls basketball team went 2-3 and finished eighth in the Navarro Tournament Thursday through Saturday.
Wimberley 57, Shiner 26
The Lady Comanches had a good handle early in their tournament opener early Thursday afternoon against Wimberley before the Lady Texans went on a 26-10 run in the second frame and Shiner could not catch up, falling 57-26.
The teams traded blows at the start of the game with JaMya Wright putting back a missed shot and Wimberley’s Campbell Woodward made two baskets top give the Lady Texans a 4-2 lead.
Closer to the end of the period, Jaliyah Barnett took a pass from Callie Sevcik and drained a three to put Shiner ahead 7-6.
Wimberley scored the first five points of the second quarter for an 11-7 lead and Shiner went on a 5-2 run with a triple by Morgan Lenehan and a Sevcik bucket to get within 13-12. Wimberley then went on an 11-0 run with Drew Thames’s three-point play as the highlight.
Lenehan then made a jumper and later a tres to bring Shiner within 24-17. The Lady Texans hit two triples as they scored the final eight points of the frame to take a 32-17 halftime lead.
Jade Duncan hit a tres early in the third to put Wimberley on top 35-17.
Shiner then outscored the Lady Texans 9-2 with five points by Sevcik and four from Lenehan. Wimberley ended the quarter on a 5-0 run and proceeded to outscore the Lady Comanches 12-0 in the fourth period.
Lenehan was Shiner’s scoring leader with 12 points while Addie Laney led Lady Texans with 13 points.

Sevcik sank two triples and scored 15 points, Lenehan netted 15 points and Kailey Boedeker deposited 13 points and two tres as Shiner rebounded with a 52-26 win over Gloria Dea Academy a little later on Thursday afternoon.
Lenehan netted seven points in Shiner’s 9-1 run to start the game. Savannah Osuna made two shots to get the Lady Lions within 9-5. Shiner then went on a 14-0 run for the remainder of the quarter, scoring triples on the last four baskets: one by Hailey Radicke, two by Sevcik and one by Boedeker with Sevcik getting two assists, Barnett and Wright getting one each.
Gloria Dea Academy got back in the game with an 7-2 run to start the second frame. Lenehan made two free throws, Boedeker made a three and Barnett got an inside bucket in the Lady Comanches’ 7-0 run to end the first half.
A free throw by Boedeker and a jumper was key to a 7-0 Shiner run to start the third period.
The Lady Lions scored the last five points of the quarter to cut Shiner’s lead to 41-19. In the fourth frame, Shiner scored 11 of 18 points with five points coming from Sevcik.

The Lady Comanches concluded pool play with a 49-28 win over San Antonio St. Mary’s Hall on Friday morning. Lenehan hit a triple and scored 15 points to top Shiner scoring while Wright chipped in 11 points.
Shiner took a 15-6 lead after the first quarter and led 23-10 at halftime.
The Lady Comanches outscored Saint Mary’s Hall 19-3 in the third quarter and the Lady Barons went on a 15-7 run in the fourth quarter.
Maddie Florence led Saint Mary’s Hall with 15 points, all on triples.

Down by 13 after the first quarter, the Lady Comanches outscored Jourdanton 44-41 the rest of the game but fell to the Squaws 62-50 Saturday morning to start Silver bracket play.
Jourdanton started the game with a 19-6 run and Shiner went on a 17-9 second-quarter run to knock the Squaws’ halftime advantage down to 28-23,
Shiner cut into the lead further in the third quarter with 15 of 27 points to trail 40-38 before Jourdanton went on a 22-12 run in the fourth period to seal the victory. Callie Sevcik scored 15 points and one triple to lead Shiner with Barnett adding nine points on three tres.
Alyannah Alvarado led Jourdanton and all scorers with 27 points while Savanna Schuhart bucketed 22 points and Bobbiejo Gonzales had 11 points.

The Lady Comanches were trailing 37-24 to enter the fourth frame of their tournament closer against Poth. Shiner went on a 19-12 run but a full comeback bid was a little short as Poth took a 49-34 win. The game was 9-9 after the first quarter and 13-3 Poth run gave them a 22-12 halftime lead.
