Moulton boys basketball: Katz place second at home tournament

    The Katz won three of four games to place runner up in their home tournament last Thursday through Friday
    Moulton 57, Nixon-Smiley 48
    Four players scored 10 or more points as the Katz held off Nixon-Smiley 57-48 in the first game for the Katz.
    Kenton Kirkland sank 14 points, Seth Beyer dropped down 12 points with three triples; Jaxon Bartos recorded one tres and 11 points while Landon Chaloupla tallied 10 points.
    Bartos made two buckets and Chaloupka scored off a steal as Moulton scored six of the first nine points of the game.
    The Mustangs were able to close within 14-7 before the Katz closed out the quarter with a 10-0 with five points and a triple each by Chaloupka and Beyer.
    Moulton went ahead 33-11 as Bartos, Bryan Fernandez and Beyer each had a three for a 9-0 run.
    The ‘Stangs responded with a 10-0 run led by six points by Tristan Mikesh, who led all scorers with 16 points. The Katz made three free throws to lead 36-21 at the break.
    Nixon scored six of the first nine points of the third period as Nicolas Martinez connected on two shots to lead the run.
    Bartos scored four points as the Katz scored five straight points.
    A three-point play by Omar Abundis was key in a 7-0 run by the ‘Stangs to get the gap to 44-34; Katz had the last laugh of the frame by scoring five straight, mainly on two field goals by Kirkland.
    In the fourth quarter, Moulton managed to put up a 53-37 lead and from that point, Nixon outscored the Katz 11-4 but could not fully close the gap.

    The Austin Royals held on to a three-point halftime lead with a 28-19 run in the second half to deal the Katz their only tournament loss 50-38.
    Royals led 11-7 after one frame and Moulton scored 12 of 23 points in the second box;  Royals outscored the Katz 21-14 in the third period and 7-5 in the fourth stanza.
    Kirkland bagged 12 points to lead Moulton; Lukas Jackson led all scorers with four triples and 17 points while teammate Isaiah Richardson netted 16 points with two treys.

    Moulton 59 Sacred Heart 39
    Bartos hit a triple and got 13 points with Beyer and Chaloupka each putting in 11 points and three treys each as Moulton defeated Sacred Heart 59-39 later on Friday.
    The Katz led 19-3 after the first quarter and led 31-9 at halftime. They outscored the Indians 14-9 in the third stanza and endured a 21-14 push by Sacred Heart in the fourth quarter. Hudson Kutac scored 17 points for SH and Riley Haas added 13 points. The two combined for eight triples.

    Chaloupka scored 18 points and had four tres to lead the Katz to a 79-28 win over Bastrop Tribe on Saturday. Hunter Anderle added 17 points with Beyer chipping 11 points with a pair of triple and Bartos recording 10 points.
    Moulton led 19-6 after the first frame and went on a 22-5 run in the second fram for a 41-11 halftime lead.
    Moulton outscored Tribe 31-7 in the third period and Tribe scored 10 of 17 points in the fourth period.
    Luke Lock had two treys and a dozen points to lead Tribe.
