SISD Superintendent Alex Remschel announces resignation

The Shiner Independent School District has accepted the resignation of Superintendent Alex Remschel.
“I have been in education for 31 years and have been blessed to serve as Superintendent of Shiner ISD for the last six years,” Remschel said. “I am honored that the Shiner ISD Board of Trustees took a chance on me in 2019 to lead the district. I have worked every day to hopefully make them proud of their decision.”
Remschel said he is filled with so much pride and a sense of accomplishment while serving the district.
“It has been an amazing six years serving the Shiner community,” Remschel said. “We have worked to create a team mindset in the district where everyone is a valuable piece of the puzzle. Together we have reached the pinnacle of academic and extra-curricular successes many times over. I couldn’t ask for a more perfect school and community to finish out my career.”
Remschel said his decision to retire was made with much thought.
“This step has come with a great level of anxiety,” Remschel said. “All I have ever known is public education, but I know that my faith will help create a new path where I can continue to make a positive impact in the Shiner community. I absolutely love the people I work with every day, and the kiddos I see at the front door every morning. They are the driving force behind my 31 years in education. It is now and has always been about the relationships I have been blessed with in this business.”
“I have been in school since I started in Gonzales in Mrs. Winegeart’s kindergarten in the 70s. I love public education, and truly believe in what public education provides our students. There are moments in life when it is time to pass the torch and trust someone else to successfully carry it into the future. Now is that time for me.”
There are many things Remschel has accomplished while serving the district.
“Working with board and school staff, we have done great things to create sustained student success and set us up for many years to come,” Remschel said.
“With the communities help, we have passed two bond projects while drastically lowering school taxes for everyone in the Shiner ISD school boundary. Winning two UIL Lone Star Cups in six years has been a lot of fun, but the day to day successes that we get to celebrate have always been the best accomplishments to me.
We have worked hard to sustain a culture that Shiner has always been proud of. We have continued the high standard of success that was in place long before me, and that will be here long after me.”
Remschel said he has hoped he made a positive impact on the school district.
“I hope that I have been a positive light in the lives of our teachers, staff, and students,” Remschel said. “There is so much darkness in the world, and I tried to battle that each day by believing there is something great in store for each and every one of us.
Positive creates positive and negative creates negative. My prayer each day is that I may use the blessings heaped upon me to bless those around me. I hope when everyone looks back on this time in Shiner ISD, they smile and think of the many amazing things we accomplished together.”
Remschel said he will miss the teachers, staff and students that he has been blessed to work with and care for the most.
“Greeting students at the front door every morning is like drinking from the fountain of youth,” Remschel said. “They always provide me with the energy to be my best for them each day.”
“I would like to thank the Shiner community for all of the amazing support through the years. We have so many amazing people in Shiner who are constantly looking for ways to help make the educational experience special for all of our students. I appreciate the Shiner Education Foundation, Shiner Academic and Athletic Foundation, PTO, booster clubs, local businesses, volunteers, and anyone else who has invested time or money into making us great. As I have always said, we all win when we invest in our children.”
Remschel said it is time for him to chase new dreams.
“I plan to focus on my faith, family, friends, and personal health,” Remschel said. “At some point, I may jump into something to add a challenge to my days, but for now, I will try to decompress from 31 years in public education. That is a lot of meetings. I look forward to traveling and seeing the world with my beautiful wife, Sandy.”
There is one advice Remschel would give to his successor.
“Be ‘all in’ with the ‘Shiner Way,’” Remschel said. “Everyone in this town is pulling the rope in the same direction. That is why ‘We Are Shiner.’ Enjoy working in the best school district and community in the State of Texas. Shiner, in my mind, has always been a destination and not a steppingstone. Carry the torch!”
