Lady Bulldogs open district with two wins, post 5-1 record at tournament

The Yoakum High School Softball Team started district with a big win at Columbus, beat Palacios at home and won five games in the Hallettsville Sacred Heart Tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the seventh and then held off Columbus in the bottom of the seventh to open district with a 4-2 win on the road Feb. 25.

Columbus took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and Yoakum tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third before taking a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning.

Hanna Garvin had one hit and scored three runs; Lilly Fojt was 1-for-4 with one RBI and a double. Olivia Fojt pitched two innings with four hits, one run, one strikeout; Hannah Schultz worked five innings with one run on four hits, three walks and six strikeouts. Morgan Yoakley had six putouts on defense.

In the last three innings against Palacios, Yoakum scored six, one and five runs to down the Palacios Sharkettes 17-3 at home on Friday. The game was 1-1 after the first inning and Palacios took a 2-1 lead after two innings. Yoakum outscored the Sharkettes 4-0 in the third and then 6-0 in the fifth. The teams each scored once in the sixth box and the Lady Bulldogs outscored Palacios 5-0 in the final frame.

At the plate, Lilly Fojt went 3-for-4, three runs, two RBI and a double; Kilynn Poole hit 3-for-4 with two runs, and Olivia Fojt was 2-for-5, run, two RBI, triple and double. Olivia Fojt pitched three innings with four hits, two runs, two walks and four strikeouts; Schultz worked four squares, one run on three hits, two walks and eight strikeouts. Yoakley made four putouts on defense. The Lady Bulldogs spotted Shiner a 4-0 lead before rallying for a 9-4 win on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Bulldogs responded quickly in the bottom of the second— Faith McCloud drew a walk, took second on a wild pitch; Olivia Fojt was walked; Lilly Fojt singled in McCloud; Morgan. Yoakley reached on an error while Olivia Fojt scored. Runner Taylor Velek went to second on a passed ball while Lilly Fojt scored. Velek scored on a Teagan Ratley single to tie the game at 4-4 and Ratley gave Yoakum a 5-4 lead on the RBI single by Deveah Rios. In the second frame, Hannah Schultz sat Shiner down in order with three straight strikeouts.

In the bottom of the second McCloud and Olivia Fojt were walked and both scored on Lilly Fojt’s double. Lilly Fojt later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Yoakley. Yoakum added one more run in the bottom of the third when McCloud got a bunt single and later scored on a steal at home. Yoakum had two outs and Hannah Schultz was up to bat when the game was called due to time expiring. Lilly Fojt went 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBI, double; McCloud got two hits, scored three runs.

Schultz ceded four runs on four hits, two walks and five strikeouts in three innings pitched. Yoakum scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a 1-1 score and it was enough to edge Goliad 3-2 on Saturday. The Tigerettes scored once in the top of the fifth inning. Yoakum led 1-0 after one inning and Goliad tied things in the third box. Olivia Fojt went 2-for-3, triple and run; Lilly Fojt batted 2-for-3 with one RBI; Schultz got two hits and Kilynne Pool got a solo home run. Lilly Fojt earned the win with five innings pitched, four hits, two runs, one batter hit, one walk and three strikeouts.Yoakley had five putouts.

In other tournament results, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Boling 11-1, lost to Sacred Heart 8-4, beat Texas School for the Deaf and won via forfeit against Veritas Academy.
