YHS Bulldog Soccer played La Vernia March 7 and San Antonio Edgewood Memorial March 11

The Yoakum High School (YHS) Bulldog Soccer Team was able to go into halftime of the March 3 game at home to Gonzales at 0-0.

It did not stay that way in the second half as the Apaches turned two chances into goals in a 2-0 win.

“I thought we defended pretty good in the first half,” Bulldogs head coach Dewayne Arkadie said.

“In the second half, after Gonzales scored the first goal, we just started running around instead of sticking to the planned positions. We had a couple of (scoring) chances, not enough. I felt like (goalkeeper) Colby (Jendrzey) did very well in goal. They scored a couple on him but he saved many more.”

“Our defense did good but we did not have enough in the midfield tonight.”

Gonzales dominated a little in the first 10 minutes and peppered the Yoakum goal with shot after shot. The ones that did not go wide or high were stopped by Jendzrey or the defense.

Nearly 11 or 12 minutes in, the Bulldogs got their first chance as Jesus Rivas played a ball to Richard Hernandez, who shot was knocked out by Gonzales for a Yoakum corner kick.

The Apaches had several more chances that did not convert and with just a couple of minutes left in the half, the Bulldogs got a free kick around 24 yards out from goal but the shot went high.

Yoakum got another free kick, this one from 46 yards out, a minute into the second half and Markangel Sanchez put the kick on goal, but it was saved.

Seven minutes later, the Apaches broke the deadlock as Carlos Garcia received the ball close in front of goal and finished his shot off.

Six minutes later, Yoakum had a chance to tie the game as Hernandez broke free on a dribble but his shot on goal was saved.

Two minutes later, the Apaches’ Mauricio Cruz received a pass in the Yoakum box and put his team ahead 2-0.

The Bulldogs had another chance with five or six minutes left as Hernandez took a corner kick and a teammate headed it wide left.

Gonzales also got a late chance with a free kick outside the box by Cruz with the shot bouncing off the crossbar.
