Dowell: A New Era Begins

By Nicole Smith

Spring break usually means rest and relaxation—but not for Coach Rodney Dowell. Instead, it was a week filled with moving boxes, swapping red shirts for blue ones, and jumping right into action. From coaching at a Brazos track meet on Monday to hanging past team photos in Sacred Heart’s athletic office by Friday, Coach Dowell and his wife Kaye hit the ground running as they made the move from Brazos to Sacred Heart.

“I will do everything I can to recreate the legacy that is Sacred Heart,” said Dowell. “There are great people here—including a coaching staff, principal, priest and a community that is ready to get back to what Sacred Heart is about. We have a platform here that God has blessed us with, and we can utilize it to impact kids.”

Coach Dowell is no stranger to the Hallettsville area. With six years at Hallettsville ISD under his belt—as offensive coordinator, boys basketball coach, and junior high coordinator—he watched his two sons, Walker and Will, graduate from Hallettsville High School. After decades of coaching around Texas, he thought he had hung up his whistle for good when he retired from Van Vleck two years ago. But after a short time in Louisiana, the coaching bug bit again—and Texas called him back home.

“I was so hungry to be successful as a young coach that I didn’t see past the wins,” Dowell reflected. “Somewhere along the way, I figured out that this job is bigger than athletics. There is no better place for that realization to come alive than Sacred Heart.”

Coach Dowell brings not only a wealth of experience but also deep respect for Sacred Heart’s rich history—particularly the 40 years of dedication by Coach Henke. He acknowledges the challenges the school has faced in recent years, including seven athletic directors in the past eight years. But Dowell is determined to lead Sacred Heart into a new chapter.

“I want to bring stability and healing to this community,” he shared. “I understand there are wounds, and together, we can rebuild trust and pride in Sacred Heart athletics.”

Known for his passion, energy, and relationship-building, Dowell is committed to creating a structured, purposeful athletic program. He’s ready to lay the groundwork with thoughtful workout plans, clear schedules, and a focus on servant leadership. He believes that through service and unity, Sacred Heart’s athletic program can rise to something greater than the sum of its parts.

“The athletic program has to be bigger than the individual pieces that make it up—individual sports and individual people,” said Dowell. “It begins with me establishing a program that teaches service. The pieces that matter are the kids, coaches, and parents. We must all work toward creating the total puzzle.”

As Coach Dowell settles into his new role, excitement is building throughout the Sacred Heart community. With a coach who brings heart, vision, and faith to the job, the future looks bright for Sacred Heart athletics!

Welcome to Sacred Heart, Coach Dowell.
