Indians garner first State Title since 2002
ARLINGTON – After years of frustration, the Sacred Heart Indians finally reached the pinnacle.
The Indians defeated Dallas First Baptist 7-3 in the finals Friday afternoon to cop the TAPPS Division V state championship at UTArlington.
Charlie Shank was the starting and winning pitcher, going 5.1 innings and gave up four hits, two unearned runs, walked two and struck out six.
Kellen Mechura worked 1.1 innings and gave up a run, three walks and struck out six.
Josh Terry pitched a third of an inning and fanned the only batter he faced.
A five-run third inning did the Saints in.
Layne Sevcik was hit by the pitch to start the frame. After an out, Terry walked and Bowen Hawkins singled to load the bases. Another base on balls forced in Layne Sevcik. Hudson Kutac hit into a fielder’s choice to score Terry. Trent Sevcik walked to force in Hawkins. One run scored on a wild pitch and another on a passed ball.
The Saints scored two runs in the top of the first inning on two errors and two hits.
The Indians replied in the bottom of the first to tie the score at 2-all.
The Indians out-hit the Saints 9-5. Terry and Hawkins had a multi-hit game.

The Indians overcame four errors to beat the previously undefeated Bellville Academy Knights 9-5 in the semifinals Thursday afternoon.
Layne Sevcik was the starting and winning pitcher. He went five innings and gave up two runs, walked six while striking out six.
Dillon Goedrich toiled a third of an inning and allowed two hits and three runs (two earned).
Charlie Shank pitched the final 1.2 innings and gave up two hits, walked one and fanned two.
The Knights committed seven errors which led to five unearned runs.
The Indians had seven hits to the Knights’ six.
The Indians led 5-0 after three innings.
In the first frame, the Tribe scored two runs without a hit.
In the second inning, two more runs scored.
Trent Sevcik led off with a single and scored when Dillon Goedrich was safe on an error. Goedrich scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead.
The Indians put across a run in the third inning on a run-scoring single by Josh Terry.
The score stayed 5-0 before Faith Academy tallied two runs in the fifth inning on two walks, a hit batsman and passed ball.
The Indians scored a run in the fifth inning to expand the lead to 6-2.
Trent Sevcik was hit by the pitch, Goedrich walked and Trent Sevcik came across on a single by Layne Sevcik.
The Knights trimmed the lead to 6-5 with a three-run sixth.
But the Indians retaliated with three runs in the seventh inning.
Terry was hit by the pitch to begin the inning and went to second when Trent Ferry walked. Terry scored on a sacrifice fly by Trent Sevcik and Goedrich knocked in two runs with a double.
The Indians had seven hits and the Knights six.
Faith Academy stranded 13 baserunners and the Indians eight.
