Council amends animal ordinance

By Clayton Kelley

The Yoakum City Council amended an ordinance regarding livestock and fowl at the May 13 meeting.

The previous ordinance allowed for 20 fowl in the city limits. The council opted to change the ordinance to no more than 10 fowl per parcel of land, one acre or less in size, or 10 fowl for each additional acre.

This is the first reading of the ordinance with a second reading in June. Fowl were also allowed to a minimum of five feet from a property line.

With the changes, the minimum would be ten feet from the property line.

The violation of a city ordinance would fall under a Class C Misdemeanor.

The Yoakum City Council approved the use of city-owned property and the dona - tion of electricity for Thursdays in July for a “Sounds of Summer” event.

“This would be 6-9 p.m. on Thursday evenings,” Yoakum Area Chamber of Commerce Director Alexa Fikac said. “We’re going to have some live music, and a food vendor come down for a little gathering to get the community together.”

Other items on the agenda include:

 • Council considered amendments to the usage of the Yoakum Community Center for certain city sponsored events.

• Council approved an above budget expenditure for Fiscal Year 2024-25 Advertising budget.

• The public hearing for junked vehicles was moved to July.
