Double the Glory! SH Indians and Indianettes Win State Titles Together for First Time in 33 Years

The last time Sacred Heart baseball and softball won state championships in the same year was in 1992.

The Indianettes defeated district rival St. Paul, 13-3, in Waco.

The state title was the fourth in a row for the Indianettes and they finished the season 14-3.

The game was much closer than the score indicated as Sacred Heart held a 3-2 lead through four and a half innings before breaking the game open with four runs in the fourth and six runs in the last two frames.

“ I was afraid we would have a letdown after the emotional game in the morning,” coach Pat Henke said. “We scored a lot of runs with two outs and that was the key.”

Sherri Honish's three-run homer with two outs following a Lady Cardinal error highlighted the fourth frame. Honish also drove in two runs with a double.

Sacred Heart collected 13 hits with Honish going 2-for-3, Kimberly Trlicek 2-for-3, Tracy Chase 2-for-5 and Kelly Grafe 2-for-5 with a three-run homer in the sixth.

SH 15, Lady Knights 1

SH defeated Wichita Falls Notre Dame 15-1 in the semifinals.

Erika Goedrich (12- 2) stymied the Lady Knight bats with a sparkling two-hitter with two strikeouts and two walks. The only Lady Knight run was unearned.

Held to one hit through the first three innings, the Indianettes scored four runs in the fourth inning to turn the game into a rout.

“We played with more emotion than we had all year,” Henke said. “The girls were really pumped.”
