St. Paul volleyball: Lady Cardinals earn second place at Yorktown tourney
The St. Paul Lady Cardinals volleyball posted a 4-1 record and placed second in the Yorktown Tournament Friday and Saturday. St. Paul played two district opponents, Victoria Faith Academy and Hallettsville Sacred Heart in the tournament.
Friday’s matches
The Lady Cardinals went 2-1 in Friday’s matched sweeping host Yorktown and district opponent Victoria Faith Academy while falling in three games to Louise.
SP 2, Yorktown 0
The Lady Cards kicked off their tournament run with a 25-17, 25-20 win over the Kitty Kats Friday morning.
Lexie Ulcak had two aces, Riley Mozisek had one ace and Reese Chilek had two kills as St. Paul scored the the first six points and led 8-1 after nine points.
Yorktown went on a 10-3 run to force an 11-11 tie; Skylar Mozisek hit a couple of aces to put the Lady Cards ahead 15-12, and then a kill and block by Addy Matias, a Riley Mozisek kill and serves from Emery Kennedy highlighted a 10-5 scoring advantage by St. Paul to win the first set.
In the second game, the Kitty Kats led 10-7 after 17 points and St. Paul raced back with a 13-3 run on serves and an ace by Kennedy, two blocks and a kill by Matias, Riley Mozisek added two kills and Ulcak got a pair of aces. From there, St. Paul went ahead 24-15 with a Riley Mozisek ace, an Ulcak play and Kennedy kill. Yorktown then delayed the win with a 4-0 run before St. Paul got the winner.

Louise 2, St. Paul 1
The Lady Cards won the first game 25-22 but could not prevent a Louise rally as the Lady Hornets won the second and third sets, 29-27 and 25-22, respectively.
Louise scored seven of the first 10 points of the opening set. St. Paul rallied with a 7-1 run with an ace and serves by Skylar Mozisek.
The Lady Cardinals later posted a 14-11 lead with a Chilek block, Skylar Mozisek kill and Riley Mozisek ace. Louise later tied the game at 20-20 followed by a St. Paul run of 5-2 to go up 1-0 in the match.
In the second game, the Lady Hornets recorded six of the first seven points.
The Lady Cards tied the set at 10-10 with a 9-4 run. Riley Mozisek and Matias had kills that assisted St. Paul in gaining a 16-12 advantage and serves by Ulcak got the Lady Cards ahead 22-15.
The Lady Hornets then went on a 7-0 sprint with kills by Kamyrn Thompson, Kennedy Long-Brown and Natalie Roades, and Louise was later at game point at 24-23 before Matias put down a kill to tie the game. The teams exchanged leads and ties until Louise scored two straight from 27-27.
The Lady Hornets scored 10 of the first 17 points of the second set and later led 21-17 before the Lady Cards outscored them 4-1. From there, Louise went on a 3-1 run to take the set and the match.

The Lady Cardinals closed out the day with a 25-16, 25-5 win over Faith Academy.
They opened a 5-2 lead in the first set with two Riley Mozisek aces and a Reese kill; the Lady Cougars responded by scoring seven of the next 10.
St. Paul then went on a 6-2 run with kills from Riley Mozisek and Matias.
The Lady Cardinals increased their advantage to 20-13, getting a Tatum Walker ace and Chilek kill. They then completed the task by scoring five of the next eight, partially on two aces by Riley Mozisek, one by Faith Brown, and plays by Chilek and Ulcak.
St. Paul started the second game on fire serving with 12 of the opening 13 points, getting seven of them on aces by Riley Mozisek and Skylar Mozisek adding a kill.
Matias joined the ace party with two for a 16-2 lead. Skylar Mozisek got two aces and a kill, Riley Mozisek got two kills and Kennedy added a kill in the set-ending 9-3 run.

The Lady Cardinals swept Ganado 25-12, 25-13. Riley Mozisek had six kills and three aces.

St. Paul opened the season at UIL 3A Edna on Aug. 12. The Lady Cardinals took the Cowgirls to the full match but Edna prevailed 25-22, 19-25, 25-19, 13-25, 15-12.
Riley Mozisek had 16 digs and 11 kills; Ulcak had 16 assists; Skylar Mozisek had 33 dis and 11 kills.
