Shiner, St. Paul football: Cards, Comanches play first scrimmages

Both Shiner football teams were on the road last week for the first scrimmages. St. Paul traveled to Bloomington and the Comanches were at Tidehaven.
St. Paul at Bloomington
Head coach Barry Wolf said his thoughts immediately after the scrimmage were that the Cardinals had not played well.
He said after viewing the film of the scrimmage, he revised his analysis.
“After watching the film, it looked like we did not play too bad but we should have scored more,” Wolf said. “When we got inside the red zone, we stalled out some.”
St. Paul looked at plenty of options for offensive schemes.
“We ran a lot of scripted plays with different players,” he said.
He added the conditioning needs to get better.
“We need to also work on staying on our offensive blocks longer because several times our quarterbacks were rushed,” Wolf said. “I felt like we moved the ball well.”
St. Paul will scrimmage at Spring Frassati Catholic School on Friday at 7 p.m.
The Cardinals open the regular season at 7 p.m. at home on Aug. 30.
Shiner at Tidehaven
Shiner scrimmaged a Tidehaven team who current squad was bigger than Shiner.
“We did some good things on both sides of the football,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. “We installed some new things in our passing game and looked good.”
As always for Shiner, offensive-line blocking will be crucial.
“On our offensive line, we need to improve our pad level and steps,” he said. “We found out how important our positioning on the line is. Running backs did well.”
The defense allowed a couple of big plays but overall did well.
“We ran to the football well and we tackled better than I anticipated we would,” Boedeker said.
Shiner will host Ganado starting at 5 p.m. today at home in the Towel Scrimmage. Fans are asked to bring white towels or HE laundry detergent to donate to the Shiner ISD athletic department.
Shiner plays at Hallettsville on Aug. 29 at 7:30 to start the regular season.
