Shiner volleyball: Lady Comanches earn third at Schulenurg tourney

The Lady Comanches finished third out of the16-team field in the Schulenburg Tournament Thursday through Saturday, going 5-3. Shiner lost to Columbus to start the Gold bracket and then defeated Weimar to win the Gold consolation.
Harlee Sevcik and Paisly Wallace were selected tor the All-Tournament Team.
Thursday Pool A play
Shiner went 2-1 Thursday morning to earn second place in Pool A with wins over Gonzales and Edna, and a loss to Victoria St. Joseph.

For the third time in less than 10 days, Shiner played Gonzales and in this version, Shiner took a 25-17, 25-19 sweep.
Lexi Boner had seven kills and Wallace had 15 assists.

The Lady Comanches took down Edna 25-23 and 25-21 in their second Pool A game.
The Lady Comanches got off to a rolling start in the first set with an 11-2 lead after 13 points on the serves of Kylynn Ramirez and Paisly Wallace. The Cowgirls got a kill from Emersyn Duarte and serves from Leighton Hunt to get within 8-7. Shiner followed with five of the next eight points on a play by Taylor Kocian, a Wallace kill and service by Harlee Sevcik.
Edna battled to a one-point game at 15-14 and Shiner then went on a 6-1 run with serves from Addie Prove; the Lady Comanches then concluded the set by surviving an 8-4 Cowgirl run.
In the second game, from a 5-5 score, Shiner scored seven of the next 10 points on a kill and ace by Sevcik, along with a kill each from Kayden Smith and Boner. 
The Cowgirls were able to eventually gain a 19-18 advantage before the Lady Comanches went on a 7-2 run as Savannah Durrett got an ace with Smith and Sevcik getting kills.

The Lady Flyers delivered Shiner’s first loss of the day and tournament by defeating the Lady Comanches 25-22 and 25-18.
Four combined aces by Jordy Ybarra and Julia Harman helped put St. Joseph ahead 7-1 in the first game.
Shiner whittled the lead down to 8-5 before the Lady Flyers scored 10 of the next 14 points with Shiner getting a Tinsley Vasek ace and Durrett kill during the run.
Shiner began to stage a comeback with a 13-5 run behind aces from Wallace and Madi Hubbard, and also kills by Smith, Sevcik and Ramirez.  
St. Joseph then scored two straight to end the first game.
In the second set, Ramirez had a kill and ace to put Shiner up 3-1 early. From 6-6, the Lady Flyers scored four straight points; Smith and Boner added a kill each to help get within 11-9.
St. Joseph then scored seven of the next 10 and soon took a 23-14 lead. A MaKenna Pish ace helped get Shiner within 23-18 before the Lady Flyers scored the final two points.

Friday Pool F play
The Lady Comanches won two and lost one in three matches in Pool F, that included district opponents Weimar and Schulenburg.
Weimar 2, Shiner 0
The Lady Comanches started off with rival Weimar, falling in two sets 25-15 and 25-16.
With a 20-13 lead in the first set, Weimar closed with a 5-2 run with a block and ace by Skylar Rhodes and later the serves of Ramsey Tolbert.
In the second game, Shiner got a kill and ace by Sevcik, and a Boner kill to lead 5-4 after nine points. With set the tied at 11-11, Weimar scored nine of the next 11 points and then held a slight scoring advantage 5-3 to finish the game and the match.

The Lady Comanches got another early-season look at a district opponent as they played host Schulenburg. Shiner came away with a 27-25, 25-23 that was as hard fought as the winning margins in both sets showed. 
In the first game, the Lady Shorthorns scored seven of the first nine points.
Shiner then went on a 9-5 run with an ace by Durrett, a Boner kill and Kocian play. 
Schulenburg then grabbed a 19-17 advantage; Shiner kept on fighting and outscored the Lady ‘Horns 5-2 with three Boner kills and two by Sevcik. 
The teams went back and worth for a little bit before Shiner scored two straight points from a 25-25 tie.
Smith, Ramirez and Sevcik all got a kill in the Lady Comanches’ 3-1 scoring run to start the second set.  Schulenburg then outscored Shiner 6-2 with a block by Clara Magliolo and serves by Haylee Vacek.
Plays by Greenli Van Zandt and Reagan Dusek put the Lady ‘Horns ahead 12-9; Shiner then scored six of the next eight points with Ramirez hitting an ace and Sevcik adding another kill. 
The Lady Comanches went on a 6-1 run from 15-15, and Schulenburg outscored them 6-2 before Shiner wrapped things up by scoring two of the last three.

The Lady Comanches got another visit with Sacred Heart, the second in four days. Shiner won 25-20 and 25-20.
A Ramirez ace contributed to a 5-3 Shiner run to start the first game.  The Indianettes then scored five of the next seven points; the Lady Comanches then put a little more on the board with kills by Curtis and Wallace, and a Durrett ace for a 14-12 lead. 
Sacred Heart then scored four straight points; Shiner retook the lead at 17-15 and then went on an 8-5 run with Kocian and Smith getting kills to put the set away.
Shiner led 11-9 after 20 points scored in the second game and Sacred Heart took a 14-13 lead. Shiner scored seven of the next eight with serves from Prove, and kills by Sevcik and Smith. Each team scored five points apiece from that point.

Wallace had a double double with 11 assists and 10 digs but Shiner fell to Columbus 25-9 and 25-15 in the Gold bracket semifinals on Saturday.

Shiner got a rematch with Weimar in the Gold consolation championship and the Lady Comanches took full advantage, winning 25-12, 20-25, 25-21.
