Indians open season on the road versus Schulenburg

The Sacred Heart Indians will be tested in their season opener with Schulenburg in Schulenburg Friday. Kickoff time is 7:30 p.m.

Schulenburg and Sacred Heart played for the first time since 1954 last season.

The Shorthorns have a new coach in Clay Ferguson and he inherits 7/7 starters from an 8-4 team that lost in the area round last season.

“We are going to have our hands full,” Indian head coach Rodney Dowell said. “Schulenburg has some very good players returning.”

Ferguson will have to find a quarterback. WR/ DB Jayse Janda, WR/ DB Reid Janda, OL/DL Dean Bradley, WR/DB Nicholas Goode and OL/ DL Zeke Guevara are the top returning starters.

In regards to the scrimmage with Kenedy Thursday, Dowell said “We struggled with the speed of the game and that is completely my fault because we have focused on learning our rules but not getting off the ball. We must improve our physical play up front on both sides. Our young players have to grow up and get better in a hurry.”
