Bulldogs open with 4A powerhouse

The Bulldogs open the regular season with two straight games at home, starting with the Sandcrabs in the 2025 Homecoming game Aug. 29.

“They are a perennial powerhouse in 4A,” Yoakum head coach Bo Robinson said. “They have gotten far in the playoffs in recent years.”

Calhoun went 7-6 (4-1) last season and reached the regional semifinals. They have 14 players returning, eight offensive starters and seven defensive starts but also have a new head coach.

Players to watch are RB-DB Isaiah Cabrales, RB-DB Holton Hadley, OL Gilbert Baldera, OL Jake Jenkins, LB Reuben Lu, RB-WR-DB David Vareta and LB-TE Dane Spencer.

“With their new head coach, we aren’t sure what we are going to see from their offense,” Robinson said. “They will do different things. Probably see some spread and Wing T. They have a receiver who they will get the ball to 10- 15 times and we have to be aware of him. We need to play sound assignment football.”

Calhoun returns majority of their defense.

“They are a very aggressive defense,” Robinson said. “We need to be able to run the football and make a lot of quick throws to our receivers, and be able to hit a deep ball since they blitz a lot.”

The Sandcrabs are predicted to take fourth in 15-4ADI.

Last year, Yoakum fought hard for a 41-32 win.
