Shiner volleyball: Lady Comanches dig deep in 3-1 win over East Bernard
The Lady Comanches searched deep inside and found the tools needed to win two straight sets to beat East Bernard 3-1 on Sept. 16.
The teams split the first two sets (25-21 Shiner; 25-19 East Bernard) before Shiner won 25-21 and 25-22.
“We found out we are able to dig deep when we are behind. We had to fight to win that match,” Shiner head coach Desiree Nitsch said. “Our girls pulled it together and never really got ratttled. We played together and made the adjustments we needed and were able to score the points we needed.”
Shiner hosted Beeville Jones on Saturday to close out non district and was scheduled to open district at Flatonia Tuesday of this week.
The Lady Comanches have met the goals for the non-district part of the season.
“We are right where we need to be,” Nitsch said. “Our schedule has been tough these last two weeks to prepare us for district. I feel like we are moving right along.”
Shiner got aces from Kylynn Ramirez and Paisly Wallace as Shiner scored seven of the first 12 points. From a 10-10 score, Shiner went ahead 16-13 on kills by Kayden Smith, Lexi Boner and Ramirez. Shiner went ahead 20-15 before EB scored four of the next five before getting within 22-21. Shiner then went on a 4-0 run to end the set, getting set point on a Boner kill.
EB started the second set well with 10 of 14 points. The Brahmarettes forged ahead 17-7 and then 23-12, ready to put a quick conclusion to the set.
Shiner rallied with seven straight points on two blocks by Wallace along with kills from Boner and Smith. EB then scored two straight to end the set.
With more aces from Wallace, Shiner led 7-4 after 11 points in the third set and was ahead 20-16 on a block by Taylor Kocian and Harlee Sevcik followed by a Sevcik ace.
Each team scored five points each from that point with a Ramirez ace giving Shiner the set and a 2-1 advantage in the match.
In the first 24 points of the fourth set, there were eight ties as neither team could build a sizable lead. Later, Shiner took an 18-15 lead; the Brahmarettes fought back for ties at 19-19, 20-20, 21-21 and 22-22.
A Smith block and serves by Ramirez helped Shiner outscore EB 3-0 to take the set and match.

Boner had nine kills with Ramirez and Kocian each adding five in Shiner’s 3-0 loss to Beeville Jones (25-16, 25-22, 25-20) on Saturday at home to conclude non district.
