Shiner, St. Paul football: Cards at home for two games; Shiner plays second straight road contest
The Cardinals are home for the first time since the season opener while Shiner wraps up non district with a trip to Luling

The Cardinals start a two-game home stand coming off the bye as they host Katy St. John XXIII.
The Lions are looking for their first win after going 0-4 to start the season.
“They are struggling a little, scoring around a touchdown a game,” Cardinals head coach Barry Wolf said. “They are working in a new quarterback.”
The Lions are balanced with their offensive schemes. They run out of a two-back system with just two receivers.
“We will have to have good run defense and force them to pass the ball. We expect they will throw it early in the game. We need to defend the pass and pressure the quarterback,” Wolf said.
Katy John XXIII runs the ’50’ and 4-3 on the defensive side of things.
Wolf said the Cardinals will work on facing the 4-3 system.
“We have to have no turnovers and work on blocking because they have big tackles on their line,” he said.
Katy John XXIII’s key players are WR-DB Micah Cohen, WR-LB Nate Sero, WR-DB Ethan Malinowski, RB-LB Ethan Quinton, TE-LB Cade Mouton and RB-DB Anthony Villarreal
The Lions won last year’s game 42-14.
Next week, St. Paul hosts Fort Bend Christian in the 2025 Homecoming game.
Shiner at Luling
The Comanches (4-0) wrap up both a two-game roadtrip and the non-district schedule with a 7:30 p.m. game tomorrow at Luling (0-3).
The Eagles are 0-3 and fell to Austin Travis 34-8 in their last game
Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said the Eagles have been improving.
“Like Industrial, they are getting better and we expect this game to be a challenge. They only lost a few players from last year.”
The Eagles offense goes out of the spread and has a good balance between the run and the pass.
“We need to be ready to defend the run and the pass,” Boedeker said. “Quarterback Gary Cantu does a good job of running the zone read and receiver Malik LeBlanc is a solid player.”
Luling’s defense runs the split and the 4-3 formations.
“They really like to blitz the linebackers so our offensive key will be picking those up,” Boedeker said.
Shiner posted a 56-7 win in the 2024 game.
Shiner has an off date next week before starting district with the Homecoming game Oct. 10 against Charlotte.
