He attended St. Ludmila Elementary School then transferred to Shiner Junior/Senior High School graduating in 1964. Andrew attended Southwest Texas State University earning a bachelor’s degree in 1968 and a master’s in administration in 1983.
In 1968, Andrew married Shirley Jurica Schacherl who became his life partner and biggest supporter in all he did or attempted to do. In 1968 Andrew also began his career in education, a career that would cover 50 years of education involvement in a variety of roles. He was a Social Studies teacher at Needville ISD, Rice CISD, and Goliad ISD. While at Shiner ISD he was a teacher, coach and High School Principal, retiring from Shiner ISD as High School Principal. Retirement didn’t mean that he left education too far behind. He served as a member of Shiner Independent School District Bord of Trustees for 18.5 years 6.5 of those as board president. He also spent 12 years as a “retired rehire” social studies teacher in Goliad ISD driving to Goliad every day during that time. Andrew was a tireless advocate for schools, children and the improvement of education. He was a loving and nurturing husband, father, POPO, brother and friend.
Andrew was very community and civic-minded and devoted much of his time and energy to his community. Andrew served as a member of Shiner City Council for 12 years and often said working with the Main Street project and constructing the Hoffie & Lank Wolters Library were very fond memories. Before being elected to Shiner ISD school board, he served as a member, and in some cases an officer, of several organizations such as the Shiner Game and Fish, Shiner Rotary Club, Shiner Young Farmers, Shiner Chamber of Commerce, Shiner Little League, Shiner All Sports Booster Club, Texas State Teachers Association, and Texas Association of Secondary School Principals. Andrew was also a director for the Shiner Project Show and served as the official weigher for many years. In his Retirement Andrew enjoyed traveling with Shirley to many scenic areas of the United States. Their goal was to visit all 50 states. Naturally Andrew had to visit many historic sites wherever they went.
