St. Paul boys basketball: St. Paul boys drop first three games
The Cardinals basketball team started off the season with three losses, at Snook Nov. 21 and two games at home on Nov. 24, to Lockhart and Goliad.
Goliad 76, St. Paul 47
Jace Matias scored 18 points and Jack Ehrig was also in double digits with 11 points as St. Paul fell to a hot-shooting Lockhart team in the afternoon.
Matias took a pass from Tyler Pendley early in the first quarter and made a layup before Logan Youngblood for Goliad hit two treys and scored eight points to put the Tigers ahead 8-2. They closed out the opening quarter with a 12-8 run for a 20-10 lead. Matias led the Cardinals with six points and Youngblood netted 14 points.
The Tigers opened the second frame with a 10-0 run. Matias recorded another four points as each team scored eight points each for a 38-18 Goliad halftime lead.
Youngblood and Preston Tucker each scored five points in Goliad’s 20-15 run in the third quarter with Pendley and Jack Leonard each sinking four points for St. Paul.
Goliad slightly outscored the Cards 18-14 in the fourth quarter, Ehrig paced St. Paul with 10 points and Goliad’s Grant Windham netted 10 points.
Youngblood led all scorers with 24 points and six triples with Windham booking 22 points.

St. Paul led Snook 34-33 at the end of the third quarter and almost pulled off a win in the season opener on the road Friday but Snook rallied for a 54-38 win.
Snook led 11-9 after the first quarter and St. Paul went on a 17-11 second-quarter run. Snook scored 11 of 19 points in the third frame to reduce the Cardinals’ lead 34-33 and the outscored St. Paul 21-4 in the final eight minutes. Pendley’s 11 points led St. Paul.

Matias scored 20 points and Ehrig netted 17 points in Nov. 24 morning game against Lockhart, won by the Lions 69-53.
The Lions led 13-6 after the first quarter and outscored St. Paul 24-12 in the second box for a 37-18 halftime lead.
Lockhart scored 23 of 40 points in the fourth quarter and St. Paul fought back with an 18-9 fourth-quarter run.
