St. Paul girls basketball: St. Paul girls beat Luling, lose to SHS

A 19-4 third-quarter run helped the Lady Cardinals secure a 48-38 win over Luling on the afternoon of Nov. 25 before the Thanksgiving Break.
The St. Paul bench got significant playing time in the game.
“This was a good opportunity to see the full depth of our bench,” St. Paul head coach Max Bergkamp said. “We were able to get them minutes and they learned how help defend a lead. Since we have had more games than practice up to this point, they had to learn on the fly as live action is a little more important.”
Riley Mozisek led St. Paul with 13 points while Reese Chilek secured a dozen points and Skylar Mozisek bagged 10 points.
Ahead 21-14 at halftime, the Lady Cardinals opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run with four points by Riley Mozisek, McKinley Jacobs got a steal and made a layup, and Chilek later made an inside shot.
Luling made a couple of free throws to halt the run followed by Chilek making a free throw and Addy Matias sinking two for a 32-16 lead.
St. Paul then scored eight of the last 10 points with Skylar Mozisek netting five of those points on a bucket and a 3-for-4 free-throw effort.
The Lady Eagles started the fourth quarter with a 10-1 run with four buckets and eight points by Khylie Busto, and Evyn Bryant putting back a missed shot.
Chilek hit two shots as St. Paul slightly outscored the Lady Eagles 5-4 to take a 46-32 lead.
Luling managed a 6-2 run for the remainder of the game.
Riley and Skylar Mozisek scored five and four points, respectively, to get St. Paul the first nine points of the game.
The Lady Eagles got within 11-6 and St. Paul got a bucket each from Jacobs and Chilek for a 15-6 lead at the end of the first.
In the second frame, the Lady Eagles scored the first two buckets to get within 15-10; St. Paul scored six of the last 10 points of the quarter with Riley Mozisek and Annabelle Collins making shots.
