Shiner football: Comanches ready for a seasoned Junction team in state quarterfinals
The Shiner Comanches meet the Junction Eagles for the second straight year in the Region IV-2ADII final (state quarterfinals).
The game will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Hutto Memorial Stadium; the Comanches will be the visiting team.
Like Shiner, Junction is 13-0 including a forfeit win over Center Point.
The Eagles are scoring nearly 43 points a game and allowing just 8.0 points a game.
Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said Junction is similar to last year but is improved because of plenty of returners.
“They are experienced, tough on defense and score a lot of points,” he said.
The Eagles run a balanced offense out of the spread, led by quarterback Chasen Doyal.
Junction’s main rushing weapons are Brock Bierschwale, Koda Bierschwale and Aydin O’Brien. Tight end Bode Bierschwale will likely also get a carry or two as well as blocking and catching duties.
“Our defense will need to play with speed and tackle well in open spaces,” Boedeker said. “Junction’s offense has been difficult to stop. We need to run to the football and prevent big plays.”
The Eagles defensive strengths are with the line and linebackers.
“Junction is not too big but they are very athletic,” Boedeker said. “It will be important to stay on our blocks because Junction is good at running to the football.”
In last year’s game, Shiner grounded the Eagles offense in a 27-0 shut out.
