Shiner, St. Paul girls basketball: Lady Cardinals change defense in win over Shiner

After a 17-17 tie at the end of the first quarter, the St. Paul Lady Cardinals decided to make some changes.
St. Paul switched from a man-to-man defense to a zone defense in their away non-district game Dec. 2 at cross-town rivals Shiner and came away with a 55-37 win.
“Really pleased with our adjustment after the first quarter,” Lady Cardinals head coach Max Bergkamp said. “Switching up our defense seemed to throw the rhythm Shiner had off. That change gave us a little boost in the second, third and fourth quarters.”
Kristin Cerny led all scorers with 17 points and hit one triple while Riley Mozisek scored 12 points with two three-point baskets with Skylar Mozisek (10) and Reese Chilek (12) also netting double-digit points.
For the Lady Comanches, Jaliyah Barnett made two treys and scored 12 points while Addy Siegel netted a dozen points as well.
Although the score may not show it, the Lady Comanches continue to get better.
“I thought we executed our offense better but we just did not hit our shots that we needed to hit,” Shiner head coach Kristi Peterson said. “I thought defensively we did a good job. We did not do a good job in transition because St. Paul had a lot of transition baskets. We will focus on the good things we did. We also need to get better at rebounding.”
In the second quarter, St. Paul’s Ashin DeSarro put back a missed shot and Cerny connected on two layups for a 23-17 Lady Cardinal lead. Lady Comanches Hailey Radicke got a steal and scored, starting a 7-2 run to get them within 25-24.
St. Paul finished the quarter with a 5-0 run as Addy Matias assisted on a Riley Mozisek triple and Cerny scored after securing a steal to give the visitors a 30-24 halftime lead.
Chilek netted six points and Riley Mozisek converted a three-point play after an offensive board to put the Lady Cardinals ahead 41-24 and they would score six of the last eight points. For Shiner, Kenzie Springfield made two buckets.
In the fourth quarter, Siegel scored three points while Barnett, Springfield and Marie Johnson each sank two points in a 9-8 Lady Comanches scoring advantage. Cerny’s four points led St. Paul.
To open the game, Barnett and Siegel each made a shot as Shiner led 5-4 after nine points.  Shiner then went on a 9-3 run led by a triple and five points by Barnett with Lexi Boner hitting a jumper after a pass from Kallee Kifer.
Riley Mozisek and Cerny each made a three as St. Paul then outscored Shiner 10-3 for a tie game at the end of the quarter.
