Joyce Mikes
Joyce Michna Mikes, 99, of Shiner, passed into eternal rest on Monday, January 5, 2025.
Joyce was born on May 13, 1926, in Shiner, the only child of Joseph and Lylie Kelly Michna. She was baptized and confirmed in Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. She attended St. Ludmila’s Academy graduating with the class of 1943. She worked at TexTan in Yoakum after graduation. On June 4, 1946 she married Jerry J. Mikes in a Nuptial mass and was blessed with 41 years of marriage.
Joyce was a devout Roman Catholic and throughout her life was active in her church school and community. In her younger years, she was a member of the adult choir, served on the church council, and was a life member and past president of the Altar Society. She belonged to a group of volunteer church cleaners and worked for church picnics and fund-raisers. She was a rosary leader, Acts Retreat member, and a weekly adorer in the Adoration Chapel.
In school, she served as President of the PTA, a cub scout Mother, and a volunteer worker in St. Ludmila’s library. She also volunteered for Road to Recovery, driving cancer patients to out of town treatments.
She was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6209 Shiner, joining in December 1946. She was a life member of Shiner Auxiliary holding many offices including President. She was a life member of the VFW National Home and a past President of District 24, Department of Texas.
She had many hobbies including gardening, crocheting, sewing, cooking, baking and playing “42”. She also had a passion for animals.
Joyce is survived by her son, David Mikes and wife Arleen of Wimberley; grandchildren, Ryan Ulcak and wife Beth Whitehead of Houston, Miranda Guthman and husband Kelly of Richmond, and Morgan Mikes of Kyle.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Mikes; daughter, Delene Ulcak; and her parents, Joseph and Lylie Michna.
A rosary was recited at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 10 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church.
A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Jacob Mendoza serving as celebrant.
The organist rendered beautiful hymns before and during the mass.
Interment followed in the Shiner Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ryan Ulcak, Kelly Guthman, Bobby Bartel, Ben Malina Jr., Pat Strauss and Ben Machacek.
