Largest wildfires in Texas history continue

By Murray MontgomeryStaff WriterAccording to a report by Texas A&M Forrest Service, the largest wildfire in Texas history continues to threaten the Texas Panhandle and portions of Oklahoma.The conflagration dubbed the “Smokehouse Creek Fire” has burned a total of 1,075,000 across Texas and Oklahoma.

HVFD answers to house fire

The Hallettsville Volunteer Fire Department was called to a structure (house) fire last Wednesday, Feb. 28 around 9:28 a.m. According to HVFD fire chief Stephen Grahmann, the house located at 409 N. Rogers St., had heavy fire damage to the back and moderate fire damage to the front.

Fire occurs in Yoakum Monday night, no injuries reported

A structural fire occurred on Jan. 8 at Joe’s Auto Upholstery at 706 W. Gonzales in Yoakum. The call came in to the Yoakum Fire Department (YFD) at 6:18 p.m. Several members of the YFD are shown checking the damages to the building.

Saturday afternoon fire call

Members of the Hallettsville Police and Volunteer Fire Department were called to assist another department as they rushed to put out a burning shed in the 1600-block of FM 318 at 2:32 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8.

Bookstore founder’s home, personal library burns on Monday in Flatonia

The Flatonia home of the founder of the once popular Austin bookstore chain, Bookstop, along with his roughly 70,000-book personal library went up flames just before lunchtime on Monday, Oct. 3 Gary Hoover escaped the 113 W. South Main St.

COLUMN: Do birds really do that?

Recently, I was doing some research for a story that I had intended to write about wildfires. However, I got very distracted by some items I found during the research process - items that were entirely off the wall - very bizarre, to say the least.
