Booby trapped safe found at Wendel’s Jewelry

A booby trap was discovered in a safe at Wendel’s Jewelry last Tuesday.Store owner Tim Michalec contacted Keith Jackson of Jackson Lock and Key Locksmith and asked him to open an old metal safe at the shop.

Monday night’s mutual aid fire call likely a total loss

Although they successfully quenched the flames, Shiner Fire Chief Billy Petru the house fire Shiner got call to assist with in Gonzales County overnight Monday will likely be written off as a total loss. “We were requested for mutual aid in Gonzales County,” Petru told us early Tuesday.

Members of the Shiner Volunteer Fire Department could use your help. A very dry summer led to an increase in Shiner’s firefighting calls, and left the department’s coffers looking bleak as it looks ahead to the coming winter months.

With all the focus given to finding Shiner firemen a new home, Shiner’s existing firehouse now finds itself in need of substantial repairs, department leaders have said for some months now. Spending money on a place you plan to abandon doesn’t make good financial sense.

Shiner city council is giving serious consideration to a local roundtable meeting that brings decision makers from the Shiner Fire Department and city together with key local business leaders and area building contractors to see if they can find a path forward in addressing its facility needs.
