Yoakum run-off election results

The results are in for the Yoakum City Council elections. For Yoakum City Council, there were two open spots for Place 2 and Place 4. Winning the spot for Place 2 is Daniel Driskell. He received 208 votes while his opponent, Jay Cassell, received 196 votes.

Yoakum run-off election begins Saturday

The run-off election for the Yoakum City Council begins this Saturday, June 15.Council approved the election at the May 14 City Council meeting. Those running include Place 4 candidates Mitchell Franz and Vanita Cheeves and Place 2 candidates Daniel Driskell and Jay Cassell.

Council approves broadband agreement

The Yoakum City Council approved an agreement for the use of poles and rightsof-way at the May 14 meeting. Rise Broadband aims to use these for the installation of fiber lines.Rise Broadband is installing fiber lines in smaller cities in the Houston and San Antonio area.

Council tables EMS requests

The Yoakum City Council has tabled a couple of requests made by Yoakum Emergency Medical Services at the April 9 meeting.One of these requests were for the addition of two full-time employees for the EMS department.

Yoakum reviewing applications for new city manager

Officials of the City of Yoakum have been making some headway on the search for a new city manager.Within the past six months, Yoakum has gone through two city managers. Both former city managers, Kevin Coleman and William Linn, were relieved of their duties.

Council receives racial profiling report

The Yoakum City Council received the 2023 racial profiling report from the Yoakum Police Department at the March 12 meeting.The report showed that there was a total of 1,035 traffic stops. Of the 1,035 traffic stops, 461 individuals were Hispanic, 466 were white, 98 were black, and ten were Asian.

YEDC receives needed Industrial Park II grant

The Yoakum Economic Development Corporation has officially received a disaster supplement grant in the amount of $2.5 million for Industrial Park II at the Feb. 20 joint City Council and EDC meeting.

Council reallocates funds for city improvements

The Yoakum City Council has approved the reallocation of funds from the American Recovery Plan Act for capital expenses on street improvement projects at the Feb. 13 meeting. “(There is) a list of 11 streets in town that desperately need leveling up,” former City Manager William Linn said.
