Yoakum softball: Columbus nudges Yoakum out of postseason
The Lady Bulldogs ecstatic run in the playoffs ended last week with a close-contested series with district rival Columbus 2-0 (2-1, 9-7) in Weimar.
In both games, Columbus had to rally, including overcoming a four-run deficit in the seventh inning of the second game. The Lady Cardinals have had Yoakum’s number this season with four of four wins.
Yoakum bids farewell to seniors Hannah Boswell, Julia Fojt, Taylor Hlavac and Kylie Velek who finish on a good note with area championship and regional quarterfinals appearance.
Columbus 2, Yoakum 1 (Game 1)
The Lady Bulldogs held Columbus in check for most of the game despite ceding seven hits until the Lady Cardinals managed to score two runs in the top of the fifth and rallying to beat Yoakum 2-1 in the opener on Thursday.
The Lady ‘Dogs took a 1-0 lead at their first time at bat but did not score again.
Yoakum was held to just two hits — a double by Kaci Idlett and one from Madilynne Steinmann; Velek scored the lone Lady ‘Dog run.
Julia Fojt pitched all seven innings with two walks and seven strikeouts. Macie Blakeney had three putouts in the field.

Columbus 9, Yoakum 7 (Game 2)
Yoakum improved at the plate and rained down the hits but Columbus once again rallied.
The Lady Cardinals trailed 7-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh and scored six runs for a 9-7 win to take the series 2-0.
Columbus took a 2-0 lead after one inning and 3-1 after two innings.
Yoakum scored a trio of runs in the third for 4-3 advantage, brought in two more runs in the fifth and added a run in the sixth.
Julia Fojt led the offense with three hits, one home run, 1 double, two total runs, two runs brought in and a stolen base. She also pitched 2 2/3 innings with three runs on four hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
Steinmann yielded four runs on seven hits, one batter hit, one walk and on strikeout in 3 1/3 innings worked; Hannah Schultz pitched 2/3 innings with three hits, two runs, a walk and strikeout.
Lexi Zaruba led the defensive effort with eight putouts.
