Military Order of the Purple Heart to recognize Yoakum as Purple Heart City

Readers are encouraged to join the City of Yoakum in honoring those who were wounded or died in active military service at the Yoakum Fire Station for the Memorial Day Event on Monday, May 30, at 10 a.m.

During the event, a proclamation will be made on behalf of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Department of Texas State Commander Lazaro Camarillo III, according to City Clerk Theresa A Bowe.

“(The Military Order of the Purple Heart) promotes the Purple Heart designation for cities. It's kind of like the Purple Heart Trail. I found out about this about a year ago, and the council was on board,” said Bowe. “They did a proclamation to designate the City of Yoakum as a Purple Heart city.”

The recognition solidifies the City of Yoakum as a supporter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and its mission.

“We take this opportunity to remember the sacrifices of not only those who served and died, but the family that is left behind…” states a release from the City Clerk’s Office. “Please join us for this special time to demonstrate our appreciation to those who have worked to provide and preserve the freedoms and security that we enjoy.”

Organizations and individuals hoping to participate in the event by providing a wreath to be displayed at the fire station can contact Theresa or Gretta at City Hall to RSVP at 361-293-6321.
