Jahn to build on passion for architecture at A&M
After graduating from Yoakum High School (YHS) as the 2022 Class Valedictorian, Yoakum native Sophie Jahn plans to fulfill her dream of going to Texas A&M University to study architecture.
With exemplary skills in several academic fields and the accolades to prove it, Jahn said architecture stood out as an attractive major because it merged her interests.
“I'm very excited (for college). I mean, architecture is a combination of mathematic, artistic and creative skills. I'm just excited to combine all of those together,” Jahn said.
Jahn’s list of involvement in student organizations at YHS is extensive and demonstrates various skills.
Her high school athletic career includes spots on the volleyball, softball, track, cross country and soccer teams. She also held student leadership roles as class president, vice president, a student council member and a Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Leader.
Jahn said she deepened her passion for art throughout her senior year and was proud of her placements at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Western Art Contest, Rodeo Austin Youth Art Show and the Visual Arts Scholastic Event.
Although she will miss the small-town atmosphere of Yoakum, Jahn explained that she was excited to experience College Station while attending Texas A&M as her dad and grandfather had.
Now, Jahn stares down several years of upper-level education with goals of acquiring a bachelor’s and master’s degree in architecture. She plans to expedite obtaining an architecture license by beginning her 3,000 required internship hours this summer at an architecture firm.
“I like to stay busy; I like to be productive,” said Jahn. “I just don't like having much free time. I like to be productive and doing all these extracurriculars makes me feel proud of myself.”
At the May 27 commencement ceremony, crowds seemed to agree that she had plenty to be proud of as applause erupted from the bleachers after her valedictorian address.
“(My teachers) have been there for me throughout everything. They've always been talking to me (and) helping me (by) talking tough situations…” said Jahn. “And of course, my friends. I really love them and I appreciate everything they do for me.”
