Lavaca County featured in Texas County Progress magazine
Those of us who live here already know this, but Lavaca County takes front and center this month as county officials from across Texas make plans to attend one of the many conferences and training session that typically offered this time of year.
Because when those officials plan for such things, it’s not uncommon for them to reach for a trade publication, where especially this time of year, such events are usually promoted heavily.
As they flip through magazines like Texas County Progress—the official publication of the County Judges and Commissioners Association of Texas, and one of the leading business magazines for Texas leaders in county government—they’ll be hard pressed not to notice that grand old castle of a building featured on its cover.
That’s right, folks. Our very own Lavaca County Courthouse in Hallettsville went statewide recently with the publication of the June 2022 issue of Texas County Progress magazine, out now.
Not only is our courthouse featured prominently on the magazine’s cover, but there’s also full page dedicated to the county, its leaders and just a few of the many fine and unique qualities that make Lavaca County the special place it is.
“The beautiful 1897 Romanesque Revival Lavaca County Courthouse designed by architect Eugene Heiner has seen relatively few major modifications since its construction,” say the magazine’s editors of their cover picture, who go on to mention its placement on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, its appearance in “Best Little Whorehouse” with Dolly and Burt 11 years later, and the place’s magnificent beauty, especially each Christmas season.
“December is the perfect time to visit the county seat of Hallettsville,” they go on, “when the courthouse is regally clothed in hundreds of white lights to herald the Christmas season with the Festival of Lights.”
They then touch on the Spoetzl brewery, Shiner’s historic Gaslight Theatre, Yoakum’s Chisolm Trail Memorial, the Texas State Championship Fiddlers Frolics, to name a few.
“Throughout the year, local churches host picnics that showcase the county’s strong rural roots complete with polka music and meals with that home-cooked touch,” they write. “The Half Moon Holidays and Music Fest in Shiner, the Tom-Tom Festival in Yoakum, the Town and Country Jamboree in Moulton and the Kolache Festival in Hallettsville are just a few examples of local events done Lavaca County style.”
