LaVerne Ball turns 100

The year was 1922 when LaVerne Schacherl Ball was born, July 5, to Louis and Sophie Schacherl in Floresville. Raised in Moulton, she was the oldest of four girls including Dorothy, Shirley, and Marilyn.

LaVerne attended the Sam and Will Moore Institute. She moved to Houston soon after graduation where she met the love of her life, Leonard Ball, owner of Ball Tool Company, located on North Shepherd. Leonard passed away in 2015, but LaVerne is still going strong and will soon celebrate her 100th birthday.

She has seen a lot in her 100 years, Warren G. Harding was president, gas was 11 cents per gallon, and a first-class postage stamp cost only 2 cents.

She raised three children and is the proud grandmother of five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

While most people these days dwell on the negative and complain about the littlest things, LaVerne always has a smile on her face and looks forward to tomorrow.

What’s her secret to happiness and longevity? Perhaps it is because she enjoys a small glass of wine each day, never used a computer or social media and her life is better for it. She loves an occasional Tom Collins with lots of cherries, the color yellow, good polka music and dancing…whether it’s a formal event or just scootin’ through the kitchen. The dancing may have ended but the music for LaVerne plays on.

LaVerne’s family will celebrate her with a formal dinner.  Friends and relatives are encouraged to send birthday greetings to her at 807 Janisch Rd., Houston, Texas  77018.

Happy Birthday LaVerne…we should all be more like you.
