Filing period form Lavaca County’s rural school boards opens Saturday
All three of Lavaca County’s smallest, most rural school districts will open their month-long filing period Saturday, July 23, for those who live within boundaries of their respective districts and have an interest in serving on their respective boards.
According to the Texas Secretary of State website, those individuals will need to visit their chosen schools, or visit the websites to those schools to see what information they require of candidates, and get it turned in between the dates of July 23 and 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22.
Most other school districts in the county hold their elections on a May election calendar. The rural district, as a means of saving a few costs, opted to combine their board member elections with the general elections held in November each year.
These board member races also happen to coincide with the election of several state-level leadership posts. Election Day will fall on Tuesday, Nov. 8, this year, and early voting will run Monday, Oct. 24, to Friday, Nov. 4.
The last day to apply for a ballot by mail (received, not postmarked) is Friday, Oct. 28.
Do know that Saturday, the opening of the filing period, is not a typical workday at any of the three district campuses, which include Ezzell ISD, Sweet Home ISD and Vysehrad ISD. Any questions or concerns will be taken up during normal business hours on Monday, July 25.
It’s also important to note that most of the schools—for the remainder of July, at least—do keep summer hours and are closed on Fridays. They resume normal operations hours in August, ahead of the 2022-23 school year.
Open positions at the three schools include:
Vysehrad ISD—Place 5, held by board vice president Cortney Connor (serving since November 2018), Place 4, held by board secretary Barbara Janak (2008); and Place 1, held by trustee Marla Ferlet (2017).
Sweet Home ISD—Place 5, held by board president Lolly Mican (2018); Place 1, held by trustee Amy Picha (2020); and Place 2, held by trustee Ray Peagler (2021).
Ezzell ISD—Place 3, board secretary Matt Bible (2012); Place 4, trustee Courtney Baker (2019); Place 6, trustee Robert Loudon (2010); and Place 7, trustee Angela Hartmann (2014).
