Cards, Comanches favored by DCTF for more state titles

Both the Comanches and Cardinals football teams have state championship streaks going.
St. Paul have currently won four TAPPS IV championships in a row while Shiner won its second straight UIL 2ADI and for the first time in school history, has won back-to-back
The very popular football publication Dave Campbell’s Texas Football has predicted nothing but more success for both teams.
St. Paul
DCTF has the Cardinals ranked No.1 5 in the state in 11-man private school teams and has named offensive lineman Elliot Peters to its 11-man Preseason All-State Private School Team.
The magazine has named St. Paul as its pick for the TAPPS IV 2022 state championship and first to take the top spot in DIV-2,
St. Paul welcomed back 27 lettermen, and eight starters on each side of the football from their 2021 11-1 team.
The Cardinals have a senior group of 11 players, and are experienced and deep on the lines.
Peters and Carson McNabb will lead the lines; wide-receiver/defensive back Trent Brown will contribute plays on both sides of ball.
St. Paul will need quarterback Jacob Wachsmuth and running back-linebacker to quickly adapt to expanded roles.
Other players to watch are tight-end/linebacker Josh Bonorden, running back/linebacker Zane Barta, running back/defensive back Nathan Timmons and running back/linebacker Gus Collins.
The Cardinals have a challening non-district schedule against Flatonia, TMI, Woodlands Legacy, Geneva Boerne, Austin Brentwood, San Antonio Holy Cross and a rematch of the 2021 Division IV state game against Muenster Sacred Heart which will be part of the Catholic Bowl, Sept. 10 at the Frisco Star, the training facility of the Dallas Cowboys.
In district, the Cardinals will be prepare hard for county rival Hallettsville Sacred Heart, and will face Temple Central Texas Christian and New Braunfels Christian, who was recently promoted from TAPPS six-man football.
Shiner
After making school history last season, Shiner has the opportunity to make some more with a third-straight title.
The Comanches have 28 returning lettermen, four offensive and five defensive starters returning and have 14 seniors.
They will be led by athletic and explosive running back/defensive back senior Dalton Brooks ,who has verbally committed to play Division I football at Texas A&M most likely in the secondary, who was named DCTF Class 2A Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.
DCTF has the Comanches at No.
Shiner has the usual gauntlet in non-district with Hallettsville, Industrial, Poth and East Bernard, all 3A programs.
In a reformed District 15-2ADI, the Comanches won’t have to wait until the playoffs to meet Refugio; Bloomington, Three Rivers and Kenedy enter the district along with Skidmore-Tynan who dropped down from 3ADII. The only familiar face is Ganado.
Despite having the Bobcats in district, Shiner is picked to win the district and is also predicted to take Region IV in a playoff rematch with Refugio and take the 2ADI state crown.
Brooks will have plenty of experience to help carry the load. Ryan Peterson, who only played kicker during the regular season and secondary in the playoffs, is slated to take the snaps with 2021 starting quarterback Drew Wenske likely to move to receiver while still in the secondary and as a backup quarterback.Other players to watch is running back-linebacker Beck Bishop, offensive line-linebacker Dalton Patton, offensive-defensive lineman Jacob Werner, running back/linebacker Trace Bishop, offensive-defensive lineman Colton Winkenwerder and tight end-defensive end Keenan Hailey.
